  • I had a NJ Beast bass in the red over flamed (maple?) top which appealed to my teenage goth self. It was huge and I'm only 5ft 6 so looked ridiculous. Still trying to track down a photo of me with it - when Robin Graves left Cradle Of Filth in 2002 I sent a photo of me with it and a demo... I never heard back lol.

  • New Fender releases day…

    https://shop.fender.com/en-GB/new-releases/

All quite minging? The 75th anniversary Mexicans look quite nice with the painted headstocks I guess. Don't like relic-ing but the Chrissie Hynde signature is nice to see.

Actually the Squier HH Jag in gold would be kind of cool if it didn't have a 12" radius and jumbo frets.

  • Sunset Metallic and Sky Burst Squier Contemporarys are RAD!

Chrissie Hynde is excellent and also cool to see her have a signature.

Floyd Rose Telecaster is very odd but cool in a sort of ridiculous way.

Noventa Strat and Jazzmaster are fantastic, I'd like one of those I think...

75th Anniversary Commemoratives are sublime. They're so luxurious and they remind me of the old Select Series from about a decade ago, they're probably bonkers money but there's something so lovely about an elegant burst with gold hardware.

Probably would prefer a flamey Select though...

All in all I don't hate them but I can see how it's a bit of a Marmite drop alright...

  • All quite minging?

They all look about the same every year :) Quite like the ultra luxe telecaster, nice carves on the back, but not a huge fan of the painted headstocks

  • Ha, yeah, it’s all variations on a theme isn’t it. Not totally sure about the design of the Noventa stuff (Strat gets 2 pickups and JM 3?), though I am a fan of P90s (assuming they are P90s) and I certainly don’t mind them doing something a bit different.

Painted headstocks are marmite, aren’t they. I really like them, though I think they look better with rosewood fingerboards.

  • Just looking at those Noventas. I assume the truss rod adjustment is at the body end but the maple neck models have no skunk stripe... are they using a two piece maple neck (though it doesn’t look like it)? Or some other method?

  • The sub-35lb 1x12" 40w Pro Reverb is quite a cool move, well overdue.

  • I hadn’t clocked that they’re using the neodymium Celestions, that is cool.

  • Oh yeah! Would want if I still had a gig.

  • Middle knob too! Steady on!

  • I know, eh? Careful now.

  • Yeah, plus really nothing like a Pro Reverb at all. The rattiest old OG silverface would have it on toast.

BTW what was that really cool black Guild bass with the modded bridge and two Bisonics?

  • The JS2? It's what Ron played when he got relegated in The Stooges MK2...

I would love a ratty old Pro Reverb... Who wouldn't?

  • I had one in the mid 00s. It was a bit of a dog tbh. Great when it worked, like a Twin with lower headroom. But it frequently didn't cooperate. When I got it from Hackett it had these weird 6L6GAY tubes in it which meant the output was really low. You'd have to crank the fuck out of to keep up with a drummer. Once it was retubed it was a different beast.

Actually when i say it was lower headroom than a twin, I assume it was in theory but I never got any kind of grind out of it, even playing with a really loud drummer it just got louder. Def needed a couple of pedals to achieve skronk.

Ws thinking the other day about the first thing i'll do when this shitshow is over. Very high on the list is book a rehearsal room somewhere, meet up with a couple of mates, crank up the vibrolux and make a load of noise. Can't wait.

  • i paid £500 in cash for mine. They seem to be going for £1500 now. Feckinell.

  • My champ was £250 in the late 00s. They seem to go for around £500 now. That feels more reasonable tbh.

  • I’m thinking about building this, once the weather improves a bit and the garage is habitable. It’s a sort of a mashup of a DC Special with a Thinline Tele. It would be chambered, rather than semi acoustic.

  • Love it but I'm saving up for an SG. I think.

I just accidentally posted an MP3 of me learning how to play the into of I Want You (She's so Heavy) on the L3 thread. Think i'll just leave it hanging there.

  • SG

    which tho?

  • i have no idea. I have been vacillating between an SG, a jnr (double cut natch) and maybe even a proper 335. I need some Chibson in my life. I like the Epi but man... i'm 44 and I don't have that many vices. I want a proper guitar.

  • yeah fuck that epi noise.

the limited edition standard in clamshell pink one is on my radar.

  • Ah man, there’s such a gap between the Epi 335 and the full fat Gibsons. One with decent pickups and wood at around £1200-1500 would be a winner.

Heritage H-535 maybe worth a look? Made in the Kalamazoo Gibson factory on the original machinery. Don’t think they’re really any cheaper though.
