  • Do you have a link?

We were wondering about a sofa bed in what is now our kids room as we'll eventually have to give over our guest bedroom to a kids room.

    vintage Danish

We were also looking at these plus modern repros. As we'd expect only occasional guest sleepers.

  • They don't make them any more (when I googled it I saw they were reduced to pretty much half what we paid, sigh) but it's called a Barlow. You might be able to find one somewhere.

Edit: Actually the figure for what we paid in my head was the three seater cost so they weren't reduced my that much.

  • Cheers at least I can search for dimensions and if it works keep an eye on ebay.

  • I was thinking eBay could be your friend. It's a good sofa bed, we're planning to keep it and put it in our upstairs 'snug' (second living room which would normally be the big front bedroom) which will be used for TV watching, reading, cosy stuff. Then it can still be a guest bedroom when needed.

  • It's such shit genre of products to have to search for and buy too. Despite all the marketing articles, ime most sofa beds are still shit.

My folks have an amazing pair, but they are fucking MASSIVE '90s jobbies in a very trad style. The bed element is 100% as comfortable as a normal bed. I'd love to find out where the mechanism is from and if their still around making something more to our taste.

  • We used an IKEA Delaktig as a (single) sofa bed. Makes for a pretty good sofa too.

(It was designed as a multi use platform but was only marketed as a sofa because the safety requirements for anything else were too stringent to throw money at passing)

Bonus points as a robo hoover can work below it.

  • Some baller sofas in this thread, I’ve been humbled.

  • vintage Danish one but I wonder how comfy they actually are...

There is a vintage Danish specialist dealer in the basement of Crystal Palace antiques market if you need a source.

  • No sofa bed is a comfortable sofa, prove me wrong.

  • In other incremental progress. The two replacement velux windows got fitted today, success.

Also, replacement window handles for the smoke stained room of death. How does someone fuck every single window handle in the house?

Edit: will be replacing the yellowed wedges too.

  • We still have an IKEA book folding number that we bought 2nd hand as our first ever sofa in our tiny 1 bed flat. That is a shockingly bad sofa, but the mattress upgrade makes it the comfiest bed we've ever owned.

  • How simple is it to replace handles? I have one that’s locked shut but missing a key.

  • The type in my photo (cockspur, fnar) are really easy, if you can access the screws. The bit that protrudes over the wedge comes with different thickness pads to screw in underneath and the wedges are readily available in different thicknesses. The one of the mounting holes top and bottom are slots too to help line up with existing holes.

If your handle operates an internal mechanism, then you'd have to be more careful about compatibility.

Like I said, all mine are either fucked, unlocked or completely missing, so I didn't have the removal problem. You may be able to brute force it open. These type are laughably insecure. A Jimmy on the outside and all you're fighting against is screws in PVC. Luckily these are top floor loft conversion dorma and not (easily) accessible.

  • The screws are just self tapping into the pvc, so if you so rip them out, you could epoxy the new ones in and it would oddly be more secure, just don't lost the key again or you'll have an even bigger hole to fill next time.

  • No sofa bed is a comfortable sofa, prove me wrong.

    Preach.

  • You can get replacement keys on eBay, they’re all pretty standard. A bit of Googling sorted me out for the type I needed for my particular handles.

As a side note - why the fuck are all window UPVC handles so fucking ugly.

  • the futon sofa combo...

  • I have one that's missing a key. I stuck a big screwdriver in the lock and turned and it unlocked easily.

  • Mine is! Honestly. It's really comfy. Unless you're talking arm comfort?

I don't think it passes the @hugo7 test of being 100% as comfortable as a normal bed though. It's comfortable but not 100% comfortable...

  • The most uncomfortable sofa bed I've ever slept on was in the living room of some guy in Dubrovnik. It was old, worn out and really creaky.

I had a dreadful night's sleep and when I got up I realised his living room was basically full of fascist stuff.

This was before Dubrovnik turned into Disneyland.

  • The locks are terrible. You should be able to pick it with a bit of stuff wire and an screwdriver.

  • Unless you're talking arm comfort?

My arms were attached to me and had nerve endings, last I checked.
