Hey all, my son has a Nikon RF like the one in the pic, that we got for a steal from someone on here. Its been great for him (he's 6) but now when we put a film in, although it winds it on ready to go, a little red light comes on in the viewfinder and it won't take a picture. It also smells a little like burning.
Any idea is this is easily fixable, or is it new camera time? -
• #2855
I'm not familiar with that specific model, but are you sure it does wind the film on nicely?
Red light could mean it's not happy with the way it wound on / maybe didn't catch the film leader properly. Does it sound "normal"?
Try a few more times, giving it a bit more of the film leader or a bit less and see if it catches on.Could be that the motor is busted in some way (which might explain the burnt smell), if that's the case it would most definitely not be worth it to repair the camera.

Thanks!
I'll have another fiddle and see if I can get it to do something. -

One small issue is a dot on the lens or sensor
Is it a hot/dead pixel, or a dark spot like a bit of shit in the way?
-
• #2858
It looks like something is on the lens/sensor rather than a dead pixel.
Ok, so I just switched from A to P and it disappeared. :S Curious.
I was shooting landscapes with small f ~f16-f22 yesterday. Back to A and then opened it up the dot faded away so, does that prove it's on the lens? Presumably a sensor issue would stay the same no matter what the lens did.

• #2859
It is likely the sensor if it appears as dots at those sorts of f.
This site has examples of lens vs sensor dust.

Ok, it does look like sensor dust on that. Even the description of how to find it matches what I did kinda accidentally.
Best way to clean a sensor?

Hmm, I don't have any of that shit. fucksake.

Best way to clean a sensor?
a) ignore the issue & don't shoot above f/11
b) use a shop, jessops have prices here https://www.jessops.com/c/offers/services/sensor-cleaning -

Are any of the sensor cleaning kits worth trying?

Are any of the sensor cleaning kits worth trying?
I've only done it once, many years ago, using eclipse fluid and sensor swabs. I read (maybe fake news) that different sensors require different fluid. Actually, here is the answer for your camera https://www.cameraclean.co.uk/Sensor_Swab_Specs.php?make=Sony&model=A6000
If not already, I would start with a Giottos AA1900 rocket air blower.

That site and your blower suggestion look like this lot:

Giottos rocket blower is necessary kit. All photographers should have, and know how to use, one

I have a 20 year old air blower with my DSLR kit. I just don't have my DLSR kit so I'm wondering if I buy another blower or buy the whole feckin' kit and caboodle? Maybe I'll just spray it with degreaser and wipe it down with a rag.

Probably shouldn't for the same reason you shouldn't use compressed air. Propellent contamination.
I've not had a noticeable dust issue since I've moved to M43 with the ultrasonic sensor cleaning.
Then again, I very rarely shoot below F8 (no need really) so might just not be noticing it. -
• #2868
This was really obvious only because I'd shot a bunch of sky at f20 and cycling through the photos there was a dot in the same place on a bunch of them.
I didn't just spend 500 quid to have spotty fucking photos though so I'm going to clean it but will see if the local shop will do it and might just order another blower for a first attempt and then worry about liquids and stuff if it's more stubborn.

As a first try, have a look through the menus for the sensor cleaning programme - it's there somewhere on a6000s. Pretty good for small dots, inconsistent on bigger ones. Takes ten seconds and no kit required.

Electrical tape also works perfectly to remove dust and such from the sensor

I prefer a hot wax, and strip

Hope this is appropriate to post here, if not I'll move it to classified. Have couple (at least) of compact Canon Ixus cameras, 80/100/110, not sure which, with chargers, need to check for cables (these are generic) and batteries plus an old Canon mini disc video camera that would like to give away to anyone interested, perhaps good for kids?
FOC, UK postage on me, let me know.
cheers
I did already order one, but thanks for thinking of me :)
