Sub and satellite speakers Requirement seems like gold plating to me. Drop them for an easy life.
-
• #9203
My plan was rather to go buy an amp that's, like, super strong - so it will definitely be sufficient?
More is better, right? -
• #9204
Go for bookshelf speakers, add a powered sub later if he wants.
-
• #9205
I would but there's really no fucking space unfortunately, has to be sub / sat.

@tinakino
The link to the denon you provided will do just fine. When you talk about satellite speakers I guess you mean ultra compact rather than speakers for the rear channels in a 5.1 setup. If so, pair the Denon with some Q Acoustic 3010i’s and a small powered sub, like a REL T5 or similar. If you get the sub second hand you’ll be able to stay in budget, just.

Plastic scratch polish works pretty well. When you are ripping the drive is trying to read them at much higher speeds than the cd drive. Sometimes they need the scratches taking out before they work, sometimes they never do. Car CD players were pretty tough on CD's, that's the era I've had most problems with anyway.

Cheers. I downloaded something called ‘Exact Audio Copy’ which seemed to rip with no errors. I ordinarily use Windows Media Player for speed, and the pulling of Id3 tags - something I couldn’t seem to get working on EAC and I’d forgotten just how unbearably laborious typing out track information is.

EAC is great.
Also there's a nifty tool called MP3Tag that can help ease the pain / download tags etc.
https://www.mp3tag.de/en/That being said wasn't EAC able to get tags from freedb / musicbrains etc. ?
Think you just had to manually tell it to via menus. -
• #9211
Also https://picard.musicbrainz.org/ for automatically tagging
-
• #9212
denon you provided will do just fine
..was also checking the Sony site for compact stereo systems as I had one in the past that was quite good sounding actually, turns out they're focusing on creating Daleks now though..

Oof. IIRC Yamaha do a small form factor hifi, IDK if that includes something with a CD player.

Thanks. Yes - it is entirely user error/rushing!

Has the UltraMegaBigBoomBass badge fallen off? They’re usually pretty good fun those teenage bedroom spec systems :)

Advice & ideas welcome - I have decided to upgrade my JVC ebay special turntable for a Rega Planar 1 & also decided I need a new amp to do it justice - any recommendations around the £300 mark? Will be driving Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s in a small room

I’m pretty happy with my Marantz PM5005 - I have an RP-1.

Rogers JR149 speakers are excellent + look cool!

Had a look at these, thanks... Ultimately though, reading some reviews has led me to Kanto yu6. With the additional inputs they make a lot more sense. Plus the phono preamp is meant to be acceptable.
-

Also not sure if you have seen them but I think the Kanto yu4 or yu6 would suit your needs. Powered bookshelf speakers, optical inputs and a phono stage. Also Bluetooth if needed.

Cheers, they look interesting but I ended up finding a Marantz PM6007 amp plus Dali Oberon 1 speakers package for £500.
Just drilling holes to set them up at the moment

With £500 to spend on a turntable and a pair of speakers to go with my old Denon PMA700AE amp, how do these two look?

The Denon amp is old, and has a fairly unsympathetic review here, lol.
https://www.whathifi.com/denon/pma-700ae/reviewPairing the speakers to amp doesn’t seem too important as I’ll probably upgrade amp at some point.
Same goes for the turntable, it’s as much about getting going with a hifi again.

Total guess work with mixing matching like that. It may be worth seeing if they would demo the speakers and turntable if you took your amp in. I'd take a wild stab the that the 606 paired with the Denon may be a bit harsh in sound. Maybe look for less bright speakers? Only your ears can tell though

• #9224
does it need to be new?

Rega io?

Thank you, tried to wrap my head around this; having a hard time finding the sensitivity specs of 30 year old Canton speakers.
Also I suppose if there's sub and sattelites I'd do the math for the sub?
