If they want to run Parler with their "free speech" agenda... I.e. hate speech... Then they're going to have to turn it into an onion site, run it on Tor, and make the standard web and apps be TOR proxies.
However the more they do this, the more they will push themselves underground and reduce their own audience.
Otherwise to survive on the web they're going to have to comply with the laws that apply to where they are, and ultimately this means stopping the hate speech.
This is lose-lose for them. They'd continue in either form, but diminished.

Why had all of this taken so long to happen?

I swear to God I'll steal your lectern.
This is my new favourite threat.

No one took them seriously.
No one wished to lose half their potential audience and the revenue associated with that.Basically: corporate interests were aligned with doing nothing.

The sad thing is so many people predicted the problem, and at each step others somehow believed the new low was as far as things would descend.
Will de-appifying or de-platforming be sufficient now or will these people now just move to web based chat?

This may have been mentioned here before, but I just read about Parker that it's significantly funded by the Cambridge Analytica people and requires ID and social security number to sign up (!)...
That seems wild - who, apparently concerned with free speech, would ever consider these things anything other than a massive red flag?

It’s not about free speech. It’s about being angry because there are a couple of things left which they’re not allowed to say and do, and they’re livid. It’s about the freedom to exercise those last remaining things (bristling with guns and antisocial rhetoric regardless of the broader effects on the established community).
From where I’m sitting it’s about being free to act with fury... psychopathy. Being free to fuck everyone else’s freedom. Winning. And it’s the winners who whine the most about their freedoms.
Society at large disagrees but they don’t care. So needing a password to exercise their version of freedom is not only unsurprising it confirms their victim status.

Interesting, how far into the day was this? Looks like it could almost be the National Guard.

Parler has always been nothing more than a data collection exercise for the Mercers.

and requires ID and social security number to sign up (!)...
This isn't true. ID is only required for the Parler equiv of the Twitter blue tick. Its entirely optional.

Amash's GOP successor says some of his colleagues voted to oppose certification of the election results out of fear for their families but he can't explain the others.
His politics are pretty close to Amash (anti Trump but otherwise a Libertarian fundamentalist) but the article is mostly him dissing Trump and his fellow GOP congressmen.
