  • I've also done the 'stare at an 808 in the middle of field in the Chilterns wondering why I didn't pack a patch kit' thing. I'm now pretty firmly in the 'fuck deep section wheels unless a few seconds count' camp.

    I'd be more likely to comprehend "Extensie Valva" than whatever they say out there, presumably something like "Vowve Extendah"

  • Just use extenders and pack one of those tiny plastic tools to remove them in your bag, never had a problem.
    Also comes handy to borrow shallow valve tubes in an emergency and remove valve cores if the valve breaks.

  • Also, I have these 60mm latex tubes in 50mm carbon rims, they pop out enough to inflate, just. Is 50 to the edge of the rim, should be 40 or less from the bed to the valve hole.

  • Yeah, hassle for what? You finish your Essex loop 28sec quicker than you would've done with normal rims? No one gives a fuck unless you're winning a race by 1s.

  • Anybody know what extensions Ineos use on their TT bikes for riders who don't get the custom 3D-printed aerobars? I'm looking for something with that apparently roughly 75 degree bend, but I can't find anything that goes beyond 50 degrees.

  • Can you use angled shims?

    Drag2zero reckon you can get 45degrees with their high rise bars and angled shims, presume if you combine angled with use bars you could get way over that!

  • Exactly what I carry. Definitely don't choose rim depth based in inner tube valve length!

    And forget about what the comparative time difference is between a shallow and a deep section on an all out effort, if you are riding 35kmh-45kmh kind of speeds (which is not unreasonable) then it's easier to hold your speed with a deeper rim and that's going to be more fun.

    If you're cruising about at lower speeds, then yeah, get some kinlins.

  • I have one of those in my bag for tubeless bikes and have plenty I could chuck into my road kit, which includes superpatches. All stays on the bike, so missing those bits isn’t a concern unless my saddle pack were to fall off.

  • If you're concerned with those 28s there are probably better ways to get them back. Most people under typically levels of 'which wheel' forum interrogation eventually crack and reveal the truth to be "I want them because they look cool" :)

  • Most people aren't sat on 35-45kph unless they're in a group.

    It's less frustrating to hold onto a shallow rim in windy conditions which is also more fun.

    Wheel aerodynamics aren't very cost effective unless all the other stuff is already optimised.

    So definitely choose rim depth based on the most convenient valve length.

  • I don’t think anyone denies the aesthetics. But once you’re in, the question of how deep is real, because at some point the trajectory of depth and aesthetics diverge. This is the moment when aero becomes the primary consideration, followed by scenes in Romford.

    I’m not putting this argument forward as evidence of my sanity.

    FYI, I think my position is fairly well aero optimised and my helmet straps NEVER flap.

  • Deeper is almost always faster. If the goal is speed, go deep.

    I rode Light Bicycle U 65mm across the US and Europe so they work (pain to handle in the wind though). No idea how they actually stack up against Enve, Zipp, etc in terms of aerodynamics but there was no way I was putting £££ on my ultra bike anyway.

  • They’re proprietary Bolide extensions which are 20mm OD rather than industry standard 22mm unfortunately. As above though you’d be better off tilting everything upwards (extensions and arm rests together), how you do it depends on what aerobars/bike you have.
