Getting hold of Shimano kit is the problems. I bought a mix of Shimano 12 speed recently from Merlin for c £300. 1 wanted to keep it all Shimano , which meant changing my freehub for a microdrive one . You would not have that problem with 11 speed and could avoid it with a sram 12 speed cassette. And yes to Shimano deore disc over bb7 . I have Bb7s on two bikes which are ok but denotes are great.

@furious_tiles @TotalShanner cheers think I will try some five tens, and then maybe some cheap non vented skate type shoe for winter? If you one of you changes your mind on dammits pair please pass them my way! Would have been perfect. Do they fit true to size? I'll keep my eye for a sale or lightly worn pair

Oh now I feel like a dick sorry!
Never mind what I said above, I was lying, they aren't very good. -

Do they fit true to size?
I wear a size 11 in a normal shoe/trainer.
I find the size 11 freerider pro just a touch roomy. I wear a thick pair of socks with them.
I'd read on other forums that some folk tend to size up on five tens so I had thought about sizing up. But I'm glad I didn't as I was surprised by the roomy fit. -

I’m 46 in road and mtb clipless shoes (Sidi, Fizik, NorthWave, Shimano).
Size 11 / 46 Five Tens fit me perfectly

Stiff soles for the win!
I also agree with this. I used to wear Adidas sambas for riding as I liked the soft sole and felt that it squished into the pedal giving me a good feel and grip.
But as soon as I rode with the really stiff but very grippy sole of the five tens I seen the error of my ways.
Just to clarify on fit, I find them only just slightly roomy. I can still wear them with normal socks and it's not an issue.
I also wear an 11/eu46 in fiziks and shimano Road and mtb shoes -

I also find with modern geometry meaning low BB, stiffer soles give your toes/feet some protection when you inevitably kick a rock/root

Thanks everyone, shimano deore disk brakes and 1x12 groupset circa £360 plus microspline free hub.

What wheels have you got on there , wondering if you can just replace freehub or may need a new complete hub and a quick rebuild.
Or use a sunrace casette as they fit on anything. -

Anyone want those Zee brakes I bought in Morgins? Given that I’m moving on stuff I don’t use.

I sized up an I think it was an error but I have a funny shaped foot with width at the toe and skinny ankle.
I’d be looking at the new Adidas terrex ones now. Same sole but more walking ease.

Interested, dual pot?

modern geometry meaning low BB
Yeah, even though I've been riding modern geo bikes for a number of years now, low bb is still something I've never really got used to. Have sent my self over the bars from hard pedal strikes :(

RE five 10s, worth checking Adidas out, last time I was looking for trainers they had a few pairs in the sale.
Cheaper, but not cheap mind you. -

Neil has reminded me that I have a pair of brand new unused Endura MT500 over shoes. They are size M/L UK 7-8
The 12 month return policy has past. I had meant to return them after ordering the wrong size. They don't fit my size 11 feet.Does any one want them?
edit - see that there are some online for £31 so £19 posted seems fair

Five Tens are much better than my Nike or Etnies skate shoes. Magic rubber. Used them in Badlands and would use again. But what about wet riding? How long do these shoes take to dry out given they don't have much mesh, they're pretty enclosed?
-

Forever. They don’t dry.
It’s these (or the low ones) I want to try:

Yeah I figured. So, is there any alternative that grips pedals as well but might actually be useful for wet multi-day stuff? Or is it just a case of suck it up and maybe swapping socks or something? I've been riding dirt clipped in but anything remotely technical and wet, if I have to dab, my speedplays are fucked.

Also Five Tens but lycra shorts (no MTB baggies) = what a fucking sexy look :S
-
• #19047
Yeah its true they aren't great at drying out. Once they are wet while riding they won't dry out until sat near the radiator at home.
But the soles are magic.
-
• #19048
Yeah its just a case of sucking it up really or using over shoes.
Staying dry while riding has been an eternal quest for me. I've acquired an mt500 onesie and once I've got over shoes in my size I'm hopeful... -

The Endura over-shoes that Graeme is selling are, honest to God, the best things to wear in the current conditions (with waterproof trousers) as they make your feet stay bone dry, no matter what your shoes are. Work perfectly with flats, also.

Four piston front and rear. Think Saint but not quite so much.
And sold.
