Little update on the above - been refining the dadbike for use with the Shotgun seat for my 4 year old son for the last few weeks.
Getting a bike with as high and long geo as you can definitely helps - basically as big a frame as possible without a crotch crunching standover. Keeps them away from your face and knees as much as possible.
What really made the difference though was the One One Geoff (or Jeff Jones real version) bars - makes the kid lean forward, away from your face, while you can sit more upright.
Finally added a bigger disc to the front and bigger layback seatpost.
The seats themselves are great fun, but I don't think they were really developed/tested with bigger kids in mind (though max age is 5). With the above tweaks there's now enough space, but the seat does move around a bit. If you're thinking of getting one, definitely protect your down tube with a bit of inner tube over the threaded bar for the foot supports. And the four nuts that hold the seat at the right angle are just not up to the job- they slide back, meaning you need to bodge it a bit by tilting the seatpost back and the seat forward. I wouldn't use it with a pristine frame. (User error is of course a distinct possibility in all of these issues)
Overall would recommend but is a little overpriced considering the gripes.
