The planned visit of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to the United Kingdom in July is well-timed and of great importance. By then the European Union Withdrawal Bill ought to have passed into law and a mere three months of negotiations are scheduled to settle the terms of our departure.

However, this opportunity is dependent upon Mr Trump’s presidency. Without him the US would be offering no support for Brexit and would be seeking to frustrate it. He ought to be treated with every possible courtesy when he comes, both as befits the office he holds and in gratitude for his goodwill towards the nation of his mother’s birth.
