Democrats are going to win Georgia. Thanks Donald! We really couldn’t have done it without you making an complete utter arse of yourself.
-
• #13603
How's the rest of the US looking? Why is it focusing on Georgia?
-
• #13604
There is a run-off for two seats in the senate in Georgia. Currently being counted.
If the Democrats win then they will have control of the senate for the first time in ages and Biden might actually be able to enact some policies

Cheers
Watching the overnight ('Pro Dem') feed is quite interesting...
Seems Trump is openly doing more damage than good for the Republicans. But that might be my pro Dem bias.
-
• #13606
It does seem that way in these races
-
• #13607
It will be amazing if the dems win both seats. Worried about what will go on in Washington today though, esp if another election is 'stolen' (lost).

When Warnock was born, Georgia’s two senators were segregationists.
Now he’s the state’s first ever black senator. -

" It solidifies the astonishing transformation that has seen Georgia reshape itself from a southern Republican stronghold into a diverse and increasingly progressive state, just two months after Joe Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win there in almost three decades. "
yay america

He ordered the execution of quite a few people. All of whom if you look into thier story are the victim of crimes themselves. Its awful. I don't think he is doing it to look tough in crime. He is doing it because he is a sick fuck and because he can.
-
• #13614
if the dems do take this, it will be interdasting to see if they repay the efforts of the minorities that secured them this victory with meaningful progressive policies.
my money's on no. no they fucking won't because that would upset the big dollar status quo and we can't have that.
-
• #13615
but they're left wing socialists
-
• #13616
This'll be the biggest test for the Democrats. If they don't make radical change, I think they'll see a huge drop in voter turnout in the midterms / 2024.
Time to put their money where their mouth is.

Rick Wilson now of The Lincoln Project coined the truism "Everything Trump Touches Dies" and it really has held up.
-
• #13618
If you are a right wing Democratic Senator then you could be in a very powerful position if both Georgia seats are won. It will be those conservative Senators who really hold the balance of power.
-
• #13619
Yeah. This is huge. Looks like they've got it sewn up.
How does it work over there though? They have a majority of 1. We know the Dems aren't actually that left leaning, so is there still a real risk that their own senators will vote against more progressive policies, particularly those who only won because they weren't Trump, or are they expected to fall into line with relative ease?

Not pro-death penalty or supportive or Trump's actions on this in any way. But most people who've committed violent crimes have also been victims of some degree of violence or abuse.
Regardless of his EO's on this the system has already sentenced them to death.
-
• #13621
At the moment US politics is so divided that most votes are taken straight down party lines. This has been seen regularly over the last couple of years with the SCOTUS votes and impeachment trial.
-
• #13622

Totally agree but its also not a great look to be rushing these executions through just before a likely push to freeze and/or remove the Federal death penalty.
-
• #13623
i think the senate is now tied, equal numbers of republicans and democrats, split equally down party lines
and the vp, karmala harris has the casting vote for any bill passing through that has a split 50 votes each
-
• #13624
True but it does seem the Republicans are more zealous in their party lines rigidity.
Dems have historically broke party ranks more often. Don't count on them to back Biden as Republican senators have backed Trump.
The opportunity here is for the Dems to show what a working government looks like - passing actual bills and delivering meaningful change.
I'm betting very little will actually change though.

A Democratic controlled Senate has to repel the inbuilt Republican bias of two seats per state.
Priority No. 1, Statehood for Washington DC, (guaranteeing a further 2 Democratic seats).
In a last hurrah of county behaviour before leaving office Trump is about to order the execution of one of the most damaged individuals I've ever heard of (warning some of the article is pretty unpleasant). This is a woman who committed a heinous act of violence because she is mentally very unwell, has had violent acts perpetrated against her her entire life and has been failed at every turn by every person or organisation who were meant to protect her. Now that narcissistic orange fucking cunt of a cunty fucking baboon is going to kill her to prove he's tough on crime. I'm so fucking angry about this.
