Not as of yet as I will need all of those to actually boot, no?
-
• #6704
Yep soz thinking of post. Got any spare ram? Or I think there's an inbuilt tool for checking memory

Toying with a hackintosh.
Not sure of the shelf life of Hackintosh with Apple's move to M1.
I can see it only being 12-18 months before some prominent software stops receiving all of the updates on Intel.

Ohhh so it will get to "post" which is just the bios? Sorry, I'm not super PC savvy...
-
• #6707
I couldn't really call myself savvy either, and you're right there's not much point doing this test as it won't tell you about failing ram.
If you have a motherboard speaker, the beeps may be able to indicate something regarding your ram tho? However, there may only be a code for completely not detecting any working ram (which isn't the case for you if it's managing slowly to boot)
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool is the thing for checking your ram. Think I used it ages ago trying to find a problem with my PC, but it turned out ram wasn't the problem. Might be worth a look

It could just be an issue with the SSD tho in which case you might need to repair windows

Thanks will look that up... and yeah, tempted to just nuke.

Can anybody recommend a decent Mac repair serviceperson somewhere near Lewisham. I want to get a computer running that I have successfully managed to ruin - now I need it with the move to online learning...9 year old won't cope with a five year old kindle and I have to deliver lessons on my computer. The computer was overheating and starting to make a clicking sound. It is a 2015 MacBook Pro. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can't help with that but if you are stuck I can spot you a raspberry pi 4 if you need a computer to get the littlun learning. You'd need monitor and keyboard/mouse though.

Quick heads up here.
If anyone is interested in a Palit GeForce RTX 3070 GamingPro OC then I'm about to return mine. It's as new, boxed. Only not keeping it as the 3080 I assumed would never arrive has just shipped.
If anyone is interested let me know and you can have it for what I paid, which was £600 (+delivery/fees if paypal). It'll come with the original receipt so you'll get the warranty etc.
If not, no worries, I'll just return it to store. Just mentioning as the 30xx's are tough to get hold of. -

Was. Now ordered :/
Thanks though, Spots.
Only ordered the 3090 so far. Umming and ahhing about the rest. Latest (and probably not the last) iteration:

Way, way off my original idea (small form factor, ryzen 9). I've seen some SFF cases that fit a 3090 but they seem really cramped and I worry I'd balls the build. I also want native thunderbolt 3 in the motherboard which seems to limit me a lot. There was the B550 Vision D but it had a few first world probs like only 1gbE sockets compared to the 10/2.5gbE of the Z490, the latter also had USB for the front of the case built in etc - there are workarounds obviously but to my tired eyes the Z490 / E-ATX build seems easier straight out of the box?

Mental build haha
Youll be playing 4 instances of PUBG at once ! -

:D
My (constantly changing) thinking is that with the boost in performance compared to my current (long in the tooth) iMac/macbooks, I might make as well go all out and make it my main work machine then just pick up an M1 or something if I need it for MacOS stuff in the future. But I think all my main tools have Windows compatibility (perhaps with the exception of exporting ProRes though that may have been changed - haven't worked on windows in a decade). At that price I was vaguely toying with a Mac Pro but don't want to get new Intel macs at this stage in their product cycle and I'd still ultimately be gaming in bootcamp. -

£1200 for a motherboard?!!
What's going on with the CPU cooler? I can't see how it'll work with that MB.
Edit: Don't you just want the non-waterforce version? Seems identical otherwise.
-
• #6722
Agreed on the CPU cooler... the MB looks like it has it built in so you'd only need the radiator and not the CPU block.
Frankly if you're going for an RGB water cooled motherboard you may as well get an RGB radiator to match.

Out of curiosity, what's the spec of the machine it's replacing?
-
• #6725
I mean... if you want to bling your machine sure... just don't think it's for performance :D
Nope! Everything has been fine for a good few months, this slow boot thing is new, I did change an SSD a month or so ago but there was no change initially... Everything seated correctly. I wonder if RAM is failing?
