• What not-quite-CX tyre comes recommended for the UK winter? I've got clearance for 40mm (with mud), wanted the Vittoria Wets in 38mm but no-one has stock.

  • Vittoria Terreno Wet would be overkill and too slow for anything but slick mud in cross course. I had them on my second set of wheels racing cross. This winter I ride Mix as my winter tire. Cross season got canceled here in Baltics and had them on second set of wheels. Gave it a try. Mix is good on road rides, great in snow and also quite good on chunky/snow packed ice too. On pure ice only studs and moving just forward works. 😀 Previous couple of winters I rode on X ones (regulars, not bites) and G one allround, conti cx speed. Also fine.

Meh, the wets are 1.3 watts slower than the mix at 33mm and 30psi according to bicyclerollingresistance.com. I suspect even less at proper cross pressures. I've given up obsessing with changing tyres all the time and subscribed to Nick Craig's view that you can't really ever have enough grip.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Probably save some money and stick with my skinny tyres until the slop starts to dry out in the spring.
