  • Thanks. I haven't come across piriformis so I'll check it out. It's a strange thing because I have a manual job, lots of bending and lifting every day but it doesn't seem to aggravate it in the same way running does.

    I do think I'm quite heavy footed when I run. I had some knee issues that got cleared up by working on my cadence. I was down near 140 which I got up to around 155 on my steady runs. It's still pretty terrible I know but I'm 196cm if that's any defence.

    I think I will have to squeak in a physio trip (if/when that's allowed?). When I was rehabbing I did a lot of stretching and flexibility work, massage gun, even 3d printed a psoas stretcher but I don't think it was really solving the issue, just holding it at bay.

  • A good start to the year, probably helped by having the most sober new year since I was a kid. I ran my leg of the England Athletics Virtual Relay comp, 5 miles in 26:50, just 5 secs outside my pb. Topping the V45's at the moment but lots of people still to run. Happy with that.

  • Thats a great effort šŸ’Ŗ my goal over the next couple of months is to try and get my 5k close to that pace if i can but for 5 miles that is seriously moving

  • I reckon weā€™re going to see a marked increase in injuries as more and more people use high stack, super fast and bouncy shoes for day to day stuff.

  • More than likely. I actually can't run for longer than 20 miles in my next % i only pronate slightly on my right leg and the high stack, narrow arch, lack of heel structure really magnify it to the point it becomes a problem at the end of a long run. It's never been an issue for me in any other shoe. But for when you want to go fast these are amazing. I'm trying to find some saucony endorphin speeds though at the moment as they seem a bit more versatile for every day.

  • I would feel such a twat wearing them as I stroll around my 8 min / miles

  • Yeah the alphaflys do draw attention i'm sure but the endorphin speeds come in black now so look like a regular trainer. Except they seem to be sold out everywhere.

  • Good start to the year here, headed out for 10k yesterday, when the first km came up as 3:55 thought Iā€™d see if I could hold on, ended up with 39:50 which was quite pleasing for the first day of the year (admittedly the first few km were downhill but I live at the top of a hill so canā€™t really avoid it!)

    Re super shoes, I thought the same then bought a pair of hoka one one carbon x and my steady state 140bpm runs got nearly 10 seconds per km faster, I use them for everything from intervals to long slow runs and while Iā€™ve had some niggles recently I firmly believer thatā€™s more to do with upping my mileage in recent weeks.

    I have a pair of vaporflys in the cupboard for when I get a bit closer to actually running a marathon, they are way more squishy than the hokas and they arenā€™t as stiff so will be interesting to compare when I do get to testing them..

  • I was on my run tonight thinking Iā€™d love a pair of these but surely these are elite level trainers and I canā€™t see them lasting months of shorty British weather.

  • At local races this year and last they must have made up for the majority of the front row. They'll be common place everywhere soon just like 6 grand + super bikes at a local cat 3.
    And carbon shoes are certainly a lot cheaper than carbon bikes.

    1)See if I can go sub 40 on a 10k again like when I was 40
    2)17min 5k
    3)Reinforce the link between my self-esteem and beating people on Strava who are less than half my age.
    4) do more of those trails that I spotted from the bike

  • I had the Endorphin Speed on today and I love 'em. The injury debate is an interesting one; the thing I like about them is, considering the stack height they feel very stable, and even over something like a hard 8 mile tempo run my calves and feet feel a lot more comfortable than I'd expect, so I really think they could be a good marathon shoe. I've not tried any of the Nike super shoes but understand they're a little softer and strange feeling, so I'm not sure I would get on with them. The only other shoes I can compare them to is the Adidas Ultraboost, which I wore for two runs then gave up. Similar level of cushioning to Endorphin Speed but I was all over the place, really was like running on marshmallows.

  • Another recommendation for the Sauconys then? I'll hang on until I can get hold of a pair then. I did buy some Asics metaracers i the interim and they are almost the opposite to the Nikes and much more like a traditional racing flat i love them for intervals and short fast runs but they spank my feet up quite a bit after about 10 miles so i wouldn't wear them for anything longer than a half. They Nikes are so bouncy but it's the narrow mid foot thats more of a problem for me i think so i was hoping the endorphins would sort of split the difference? The Nike tempo next % look good but I'd need a fit more like a Pegasus rather than a 4/next % if anyone has any experience of the tempos vs those mentioned?

    7. quit all sport and start a virtual yoga studio with newly found stretch abilities*

  • A 17 min 5k is a waaay harder goal than a sub 40 min 10k based on personal experience, good luck either way!

    Anyone who can run a 17min 5k would run sub 40min 10ks without breaking a sweat..

  • Sub 40 10k would be great.
    No mysterious injuries.
    Do a 50k.
    Then 50 miles.
    Not getting injured.

  • My goals for this year

    Get back into a habit - Run 3-4 times/week
    1,000km
    Nose breathing
    Focus on new programme of stretching and physio from previous injury (previous sessions got curtailed by covid)

    Been reading Breath by James Nestor and hearing from Patrick Mckeown. Now very interested, amplified in covid times, by who's mouth breathing or nose breathing as they walk or run past me on the towpath / streets.

  • On my New Yearā€™s Day run as I was trying to not think about being a bit hungover I came across a goal for the year which was to run a marathon a month for a year. So thatā€™s what Iā€™m gonna go for

  • I ran an 18:12 in November without puking or losing bladder control:) so I think 17something isnā€™t too far out of my reach.

    For a 10k I find it hard to up my game and go deep unless Iā€™m racing...not much chance of that though. So it will be a challenge. I might cheat and warm up then run a flat course

    I come here for the Achilles heel recovery chat and to build a list of training shoes which might alleviate runners knee. Youā€™re all bouncing around in lime green moon boots at almost twice my speed!
