• lizardskin la sal are much dissapoint.. the "leather" part is perishing and the sewing came undone on the left one after 2 weeks

  • Anyone got any good recommendations for a mitt with not too thick padding? Something durable as for LEL.

Also those lizardskins ones - yes, they're rubbish. Look nice but I've had to sew them up a load of times and they've never been very comfortable

  • What you want to do is buy my Spesh Grail gloves... :)

Seriously though, I like Specialized mitts. It does depend on your regular hand position. I'm usually on the hoods when not using aerobars.

  • What you want to do is buy my Spesh Grail gloves... :)

Used on one of your long rides? My gloves are unpleasant enough after just one audax...

Obvously the sensible thing would have been to have tried out a load of gloves well before LEL, but I haven't... have heard others recommend specialized too. Am usually on hoods as well.

  • I tested them on a couple of commutes and an aborted 400k so they've not done much. Also, my stuff doesn't really stink with the exception of the stench jacket of doom and the Walmart Super Socks.

    But you've need big hands.

Personally, I would buy another pair of Spesh gloves, but, try them out in a shop and see if you like them.

  • I'm usually only a medium so presumably not suitable.

I need to go and try some on i think.

  • Yeah, no chance. I'm normally XL-XXL. But I do still recommend normal Spesh mitts.

  • I've got a pair of Castelli S.Uno that I rate. Been wearing them all day, working as a courier, for a couple of months. Still look new and super comfortable. Very little padding.

  • Ordered some grail mitts on the basis of the (probably dubious) science stuff about them preventing nerve damage. Which as my little finger is still numb from Bryan Chapman 2 months ago seems worth trying. Will report back after LEL.

  • I think they'd be better suited for MTBing where you hold a flat bar through your palm. They seem less suited to my road use since most of the pressure is actually on the side of my hand and base of the palm.

  • Assos Summerglove_S7s?
    GripGrab ProGel?
    Castelli Arenberg
    Spesh whatevers?

  • Looking for reccomendations. I'm after something with little or no padding, hard wearing and inexpensive. I might just get another pair of Castelli Unos, they lasted quite well.

  • Looking for some mitt recommendations. My Altura classic mitts are starting to wear thing and everywhere is sold out of them in large.

eBay is flooded with cheap looking mitts but I suspect they are going to be shite.

Who else does a classic looking (not necessarily crochet) mitt?

  • Dredging .. I've had GripGrab padded, short fingered gloves (I think they are the EasyRider ones) for two years in a row now, but they just disintegrate so quickly (the suede on the palm side rips and falls apart). Are there any other recommendations for more durable brands/models?

  • Specialized BG are probably one of the most durable pairs I've had. Mine are well beyond where most people would've thrown them out though.

  • Thanks for the tip, good price too! Mine are usually also far beyond, but no good if they have so many holes that it gets difficult to get your fingers in the right ones :D

  • Yeah, mine are more "tube" than glove now but there's like one strand that hasn't snapped so I'm not chucking them until they become a flappy liability.

  • My missus keeps complaining about bulky stitching on her mitts between the fingers. Anyone care to suggest some grrl (Phil) mitts that are light on the stitching or have the stitching done in such a way as to not cause roughness between the fingers?

My Assos mitts are also pretty dead now. I never really liked them so I'm probably going to see if I can get those Specialized BG mitts again. Any other suggestions?

  • Just don't wear gloves like a nerd

  • We are nerds though.

    Next.

  • Spoken like a man who’s never had to get their mum/partner to wipe their arse.

  • They now have a "double gel" variation. I tried their Grail and didn't like them compared to normal BG mitts. Anyone used this double gel variant?

  • I was also going to ask how many miles Phil has done in the last month and how much body weight he might be hanging over the bars.

I do often ride with no gloves but my hands are pretty beaten up even with mostly wearing gloves so apples and oranges, likely.

  • 1350km last month, 65kg, I don't know what portion of that is on my bars

I do actually get sore hands on long rides, I'd probably look into gloves for anything 200k or longer in the future but I get pretty sweaty palms which is why I don't usually wear em.
Anyway I was just kidding, wear gloves to wipe your arse if you like
