  • Looking for someone to price making a couple of axles and some reducers.

    Have rough drawing.

    Thanks

  • Burrows Engineering of Norwich, run by Mike Burrows of Lotus bike fame. You’ll have to call him and fax the drawing over though, he’s not online at all. But he’s excellent.

Forum approved, top caps are excellent

  • Thanks guys, I’ll contact your man above that’s been suggested first.

  • For the benefit of strangers from the future who might stumble upon this thread, this is the answer I gave the OP and the many other people who have approached me with similar requests in the past:

The parts I have for sale are made in batches, which is quite different to prototyping. I have had many prototype parts made to my drawings, for myself and a couple of other people, but going via me is usually not the best route. I always advise anybody who has a drawing which can be worked from to find a local machine shop to do the actual work.
Finding the right shop is fairly easy, just walk up to one and if you see a lathe or mill as you go through the door, keep going. If you see a desk with a receptionist behind it, you're almost certainly in the wrong place, as those shops are rarely interested in small prototypes and if they even bother to give you a price, it will be obvious that they don't want the job.
I can have a look at your drawings and give you an indication of what I'd expect to pay, which will either put you off the whole idea or at least give you a gauge to tell whether what you're being quoted by a machine shop is a "yes please" price or a "fuck off" price.

  • I can add a recommendation for Ed Mason - https://dward-design.co.uk/

I haven't (yet) had any work done by him, but have seen his work.

Have some ideas for the front end of my trek speedconcept I might explore with him later this year.

  • i have very unpredictable access to a lathe (COVID restrictions). if it's not urgent, PM me and i'll see what i can do.

  • Just to add to gbj_tester have a think how long the parts might take to make from putting down your cup of tea and walking to the lathe to putting them in a box and calling you.
How much per hour do you need to earn and pay for a workshop?
I needed an axle some spacers and a steerer reprofiled for a motorbike and was quoted from £300 and you can have them next week to £50 cash and you can have them when the boss isn’t looking (months).

Once you have set up a lathe it doesn’t take twice as long to make two parts so it might be worthwhile advertising on here in case someone else needs the same parts and you can share the cost.
