To be honest I can't say I notice any difference in sole stiffness and walking experience between the two but I do feel that the lace-ups offer better fit thanks to the adjustability. I thought I would hate having to be mindful of tucking the laces out of the way but the elasticated loop over the lace bed actually does a really good job of this. My velcro ones have been relegated to bad weather commuting and the lace ups get used for all other rides.
Thanks for that! I might try a pair of the lace up privateers then. I broke my foot a couple of years ago and it's not been the same since, any shoes I've tried with super stiff soles have just left it in agony after a while.
Try some Rapha Explore. They have a carbon sole but only 2/3 and so walk very well.
They converted me to lace ups and fit well in the ankle but have a spacious toe so thicker socks still leave a nice space around the front of the foot.
+1 for giro privateer lace. Stiff enough for riding, yet fine for walking, look decent and are comfortable. I use mine for road and MTB and in my opinion it does both really well, I don't have any criticism of them.
