I feel less likely to be exposed to the virus in my own car than I do on public transport.
There is also the fixed costs bit. Lots of people that might ordinarily have a travel card don't at the moment so will have to pay for public transport. I'm still paying the fixed cost of running my car and the incremental costs of some short journeys are much lower than public transport fares.

No official guidance, but if people from a single household get in the same car, drive to the park, maintain social distancing, and then drive back, surely that's less risk of exposure than getting on a bus / DLR / train?
Sure there's probably people that could have walked, but branding everyone in a car near the park a cunt is a bit heavy handed and possibly a tiny bit able-ist.

isnt that the self-destroying fallacy of car ownership? that does not justify flooding the park with your honda civics
-
• #18955
i mean fine if essential travel (for me it was childcare i wasnt visiting park, cycling through)

Another factor is that you can get 4 tested at a single drive through centre appointment.
We have a household of 4, likely we’ll all get tested today. -

lots of busses go to the park, 2 national rail stations and DLR walking distance, why drive?
Obviously it's to avoid crowds and covid spreaders...
To go to a super packet park or venue or shop....

super packet park
Sounds good. Where can I find one?
-
• #18959
I have only got on public transport twice since March and I'm sure a lot are the same. If I didn't cycle, I would probably drive to a park.
If I could drive I'd probably drive to Surrey with bike in the back as I'm bored of RP, is that better?

I have nothing.

Is it me or are they’re just doing tiers 4 to avoid saying National Lockdown again for another expected u-turn?

A national lockdown wouldn't be fair on the people of the Isles of Scilly.
We seem to have 5 tiers anyway. The bits of tier 4 with primary schools closed next week are higher.

• #18964
Tier 4, Tier 5 - this is actually the plan...

We seem to have 5 tiers anyway. The bits of tier 4 with primary schools closed next week are higher.
And I wouldn't put it past them that the actual plan is to have many more primary schools closed, but they didn't want to be seen to do them all at once, so they've only done some of them now and the rest will be upgraded to Tier 4.5 in the next few days (once the next batch of big numbers comes out).
Can't see how large swathes of the country aren't going to have to go back to "you're only allowed out once a day for shopping/exercise" soon.

Environment and traffic congestion issues are separate from viral pandemic issues.
Sitting next to a family member in a car is not the same as sitting next to a stranger in a poorly ventilated tube.

Primary schools and years 8-11 in Northern Ireland: Not going back to school in January
(Bar key workers kids / other special case groups)
Makes sense but also yey...
Bus wise Belfast is fine I feel safe enough but you can open windows on all buses here.

I actually feel nostalgic for this.
Simpler times.

Where are you getting 1 in 70 positive from?
These charts are suggesting much higher positive test rates: -

It's all going a bit Goombay Dance Band just now

Have you seen the new testing centre behind the lido?
From my flat I can watch people in large mixed group households drink beer in the street and also see a massive Contagion style marquee for them to get their positive test results from...

Have you seen the new testing centre behind the lido?
This the Brockwell lido? Was wondering what it was, vaccine or testing centre were our best guesses.
-
• #18973
I imagine loads of people are faking symptoms so they can take a test and then see their family.
-
• #18974
Yep, saw it going up the other day.
I hope it has heaters...

I thought it was in yesterday’s press conference. Van Tam I thought said it had shifted from 1 in 90.
I’ll try find a recording a rewatch in a bit.
Thats the bullshit that Gove slang some time ago then distanced himself from it. There is no official guidance around that.
