For further inspo, my mate who is mechanical / automotive engineer (ex-ricardo/JLR/Aston Martin etc) is building his own space framed tin top hillclimb car. It’s mid-mounted bike engine and RWD with a mk1 polo shell of sorts. It’s taken him 5yrs to get to the point of having the chassis welded together on a frame table in his garage

Out of interest, what's the point of putting a specific body shell on a project like this? Is just an affinity with a mk1 polo or that's what was laying around? Beyond the wheelbase the body shell could be anything right?

To an extent yeah, although we have been into modified polos for about 17yrs and this mk1 was cheap and mostly rotten and just donored the outer shell from the sills up. Also you never see them
