Dynamo Lights

  • There are mudguard mounts from supernova and Isen Workshop which should do the job.
Need to check if there is enough space in front of my rack to do this bc side visibility with the light next to the rack is not good.

  • How stable is mounting on the tip of the mudguard, even if it's metal don't you get a fair bit of bounce over bumps and on rough roads?

  • Gonna go dynamo next month with new wheels. How easy is it to have a setup where you can switch the front light in and out? (edelux/beacon)

  • I finally fitted the B&M μ (mu) that I bought 5 months ago. I was hesitant to drill the mudguard but in the end it was a piece of cake.

My wiring follows the brake outer along the top tube, then spirals down the seat stay and back up the mudguard stay. Looks ok.

If I have more clearance in the future I would consider having the wiring on the underside of the mudguard but right now I cba with over thinking that.

The electrical connection is temporary so I will update that at some point.

Placement is at the highest point on the mudguard that still allows fitment of the rear rack.

The light is bright, the stand light works perfectly and it’s tiny. I should have purchased a silver one but hey ho, if I had a silver one I’d want a black one.

  • Trivial with some spade connectors.

  • Mudguard mounting headlights certainly seems like a terrible idea. Is the mudguard steel and very, very stiff perhaps?

  • I can confirm the knipex crimps on the previous page work a treat on spade connectors.

    No soldering needed.

  • yea i think it is only sensible to mount it on the front if you have a stay supporting the front section as well

  • I've had an edelux mounted on my PDW guards with the isen mount and it has worked a treat for over 20k km.

  • Recycled a pair of son lights from one Brompton to the other, think it’s fairly neat...

hahaha ok. May you enjoy it for 20 more.

Canyon seem to think it's possible.

  • So after all my faffing with cable routing I'm having to repaint my frame anyway (the paint was starting to flake off on the ds chainstay) so now brazing stuff is back on the table.

I think going through the steerer and into the toptube via the breather hole is a bit much faff so it's pretty much between a reinforced hole in either end of the tt or di2 guides underneath it again.

I pulled the di2 guides off today and they were pretty firmly stuck, even on my crappy paint surface btw.

  • Well, I have enough spare connectors to be able to trim the cable and redo them so I’m going for through the tt.

I’ve curved and silvered on some washers.

Anyone got an opinion on my placement before I drill it? Should be well within the thicker part of the tubing I think.

  • Cant recommend my Isen mudguard mount enough either. Love it.

  • Loving the dynamo lights. Went on an errand yesterday afternoon before sunset and returned after dark. So good to just not have to even think about carrying/charging lights any more.

(Yes, angle is a bit steep - corrected later)

  • Agreed. Super satisfying!

  • Nice beam - what front light is that?

  • Great to see. It’s so satisfying it’s ridiculous. A return on so many hours wasted charging shitty bike lights...

  • Anyone else got a B&M IQ XS T Senso?

I noticed today that the green light in the on/off switch of mine was coming and going. Wouldn't go off completely but just dim then bright. It was around dusk so I presume it's to do with the automatic function but the instructions say there should be an 8 second delay, this was definitely going on and off more quickly than that.

I tried jiggling the wires and that didn't seem to have any effect, strangely though, getting out the seat to pedal did seem to.

I couldn't notice any change in the brightness of the light though.

  • I had two. And now have one.

Neither of my switches worked as far as I could tell. Great light thought. I just leave it on.

  • I can't see the point of the Senso function, why not just leave the light on all the time? Does it reduce resistance or something?

  • Yes, marginally. Some more recent lights have a DRL mode where they power an auxiliary set of LEDs in the daytime - which uses less power - and then switch on the main beam at night.

  • I thought I read somewhere SP dynamo's have exchangeable end-caps so I can switch the wheel between QR and TA with just changing the caps? Is this true or have I been dreaming?

I know Son have an adapter that does this, but I'm not ready to spend Son money just yet...
