Owning your own home

If I wanted to buy a place overseas with a UK mortgage, what are the general points to note?
Presumably they lend less? How do they judge property value and all that jazz?

Remortgage your current place to get the equity out, buy new place in the resulting cash.

How does that work? I don't have a mortgage on my current place.

Hit up a bank, ask them ;)

Ask the bank for one. A mortgage is just a collateralised loan, after all.

Even if you go to a UK bank you will probably end up dealing with one of their overseas branches. If you borrow in another currency your repayments will be subject to exchange rate fluctuations. I think that’s the main thing that I would worry about, particularly now.

There are lenders that will also package up options / swaps to hedge away exchange rate risk. At a price though.

If it makes you feel better, I think it is pretty ugly and I would be seriously considering getting rid of it if it were my house.

This is a good point. It makes more sense to borrow in the same currency as the property as then you get a natural hedge for the principal amount.

Have you tried a bulb in the dubiously wired fitting?

If it were me I’d either remove it totally or change it back to a more standard arrangement. The current one imho is ugly and impractical (cleaning, lots of pointy bits for kids to impale on.

Or go full hog horse brasses, fake timber beams and patterned carpet

What about a projector and a retractable screen?

Only one real option there, get some saddles and stirrups to hang on the wall, create a chandelier out of an old wagon wheel and rename your house “ye old tavern”.

That's going to be fine until you want to have a medieval banquet or Viking Feast, then you'll just feel inadequate while @stevo_com is lording it.

The sarcasm only makes me want to keep it more.

I actually think it's a really cool feature.

I'd probably still get rid of it, but I'd feel bad getting rid of something that's genuinely quite unique.
