  • I feel a bit stupid.

You and me both mate. (Edit- joke doesn’t quite work... apologies).

Either way I think you've vastly underestimated it:

Haha thanks for putting it politely, from what you’ve posted.

G1 is 3↑↑↑↑3 = 3↑↑↑(3↑↑↑3). That is 3↑↑(3↑↑(3↑↑(3... this series of numbers is 3↑↑↑3 long and a ↑↑ operation is basically a power tower. At the end of the sequence, you've got 3²⁷, then you form a power tower that is 3²⁷ long, then a power tower that is that long, and so on. You repeat this 3↑↑↑3 times...

Seems I missed a few power towers... The length of G1 sequence is 3↑↑↑3; is it correct that the length of each subsequent sequence would increase until G64 is reached?

  • Numbers above about 10184 are of dubious utility, since that's the approximate volume of the observable universe in cubic Planck lengths 🙂

If you were to write Graham’s number out digit by digit (for example, one hundred =100), putting a digit in each cubic Planck length of the known universe (a Planck length being the smallest measurement science has), you’d have no where near enough space to write out the entire number.

I find it inspiring that the human mind is capable of (at least kind of) conceptualising and expressing an exact number that is so large that it can’t fit in the physical universe.

  • is it correct that the length of each subsequent sequence would increase until G64 is reached?

Unbelievably so. If we just add one arrow instead:

3↑↑↑↑↑3 = 3↑↑↑↑(3↑↑↑↑3). We did 3↑↑↑↑3 above - that was the series of 3↑↑↑3 power towers. Now we do the four-arrow operation 3↑↑↑↑3 times!

Instead of adding 1 arrow, to get G2 you increase the number of arrows to G1!

  • I don't suppose one of the jockey wheels on this shagged shimano STX rear derailleur is meant to move 2-3 mm laterally within the hanger is it?

  • I get France often, seemingly with no rhyme/reason.

  • You can get away with some play, but 3mm is too much I think. If the bolts are snug and it shifts properly, I’d say it’s fine unless the customer prefers to change it.

  • I can sympathise. I struggle to receive gifts. It puts me in a real funk that’s a mix of lots of things.

I get given something, I am rubbish at hiding my reaction, I feel annoyed at being given something pointless, I feel bad that I’m feeling bad about being given a gift, I feel annoyed that I’m such an ungrateful shit, I feel annoyed that despite my awareness of all this, I still react like an ungrateful shit. Rinse and repeat.

Telling people that we’re not really doing gifts this year has definitely helped. It makes Christmas a bit anticlimactic (especially when we weren’t able to see family, the bit we were actually looking forward to), but it’s really helped with a lot of the associated stress and guilt.

A difficult part of it is that we don’t have much money, so we have to rationalise our purchases, so being given something that we don’t need or want seems frivolous. But we have also “trained” ourselves out of necessity to not really need or want things - because generally we can’t have them.

Today a birthday present arrived in the post. It was a really nice merino top. It’s the wrong size. It was bought from a shop local to the gift giver so it’s not particularly straightforward to return/exchange.
Already it’s stressing me out. I hate buying clothes and trying to find anything that fits (I’m an odd shape). I feel like a cunt that I’m annoyed because it’s a really nice gift. I hate exchanging gifts because it feels like a fuck you to the person who gave you the gift.
And I can’t just escape the feeling that I didn’t need the thing, and now having it is just stressing me out. I also know that I’ll actually really like it in about 6 months when I finally get over all these ridiculous feelings. My wife bought me a sick Bluetooth speaker but it took me an age to get over the guilt of it - yet I now use it daily, it was a great present!

And then to finish it all off, there’s the self loathing about being the kind of person that complains about receiving presents! WAC!

  • I just share the Amazon Wish List to the family as 'All I Want' and still get socks.

Then none of the family say what they want specifically so they just get crisp £20 pound notes in the xmas card.

  • If the giver is unlikely to observe me not wearing the merino I’d just pass it on to someone that it fits and would appreciate it. I’ve had lots of inappropriate things given to me over the years, I just don’t sweat it anymore. I have a spot where I put those things and when the occasion arises I have a look see.
If I can’t change the giver’s actions I just work around ‘em, saves me a lot of stress. This change in me didn’t happen overnight.

  • This is more out of curiosity than an actual need to know. I've just noticed that the lid for my tube of Berocca makes a fun shaking sound, like a mini maraca. Any clues as to what's in there and what purpose that could possibly serve?

  • Fair enough, thanks. Customer is a total wanker who likes to buy new things for no reason. The customer is me.

  • Any idea what dinosaur this is?

Could it be a Euoplocephalus with the wrong tail?

    Any other guesses?

    Cheers.

  • I guess it would be silica gel or something to absorb moisture

  • A louche Stegosaurus that doesn't play by the rules?

  • Ha!

Unfortunately not there is already a Stegosaurus in the puzzle.

  • Makes sense!

  • Having some SRAM 1x issues. Rival 1 RD, with an 11-42 cassette.

Shifting is fine, up and down, across the whole cassette, apart from changing out of the easiest gear into 2nd easiest. It's as though there's not enough tension to pull it back down. The B-screw is set as close as it can reasonably go without the jockey wheels hitting the cassette.

When running a chain that was too short by 1 link, shifting was fine but this gave rise to other issues...

    Any ideas?

  • More b screw, the big cassette 1x stuff doesn't work in the same way as 2x stuff where you set things up like you have. There's documentation around to show you how to set it properly, lining up something on the back of the cage with the big sprocket I think on those, but also can just keep adding half a turn until it shifts smoothly.

  • Second thought, the GXP rather than the DUB version of the arms are cheaper - there's no upside/downside of either really? going into a BSA frame.

  • I've a Supernova multimount TS. Supernova say it comes with a custom bolt. Unfortunately mine seems to have had the hex shaped drive recess custom rounded out. Short of asking supernova for a replacement (which I have, no reply yet) any ideas on how and where to source a replacement?

  • Can anyone find me a particular photograph of a cycle courier I’ve seen it online before but can’t find it now.

It’s one of a guy I knew years ago called Von he posed for a portrait as part of an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

I was riding up New Bridge St with my Son on Boxing Day and a story of a flat out ride from The Duke of York with him came to mind, I think he lived on Coin Street. Then the next day I read about him in Emily Chappells book.

Can’t find the Portrait to show my son, can anyone help?

  • I'm shit at giving presents, and I think that feeds into being crap at receiving them too.
Either I've bought it for myself or it's too expensive for me to expect someone else to buy for me. And I'm trying to cut down on stuff I don't use, so being bought extra is very kind of someone but just feels like a bit of a waste of everyone's time.

And secret santa tat from people I don't really know... a couple of years ago I got 'Vladimir Putin: Life Coach' and 'The Beautiful Poetry of Donald Trump' from some poor sod that clearly felt they needed to top up the price of a bottle of gin to about £20 (or they just thought that little of me).
I managed a polite smile and the books made 50 yards of the way home before going through the letterbox of the nearest charity shop.

A merino base layer would have been spot on actually.
Got a couple of 'hilarious' books if you want to swap, @nefarious...

Give it to the percussionist in your band?

  • there's no upside/downside of either really?

    Nothing significant
