  • Sounds like a no for Dreamweaver then...

  • The same way as an englishman from say Newcastle or London or Cornwall!!!
All different, depends where they are from.

  • yeah, a fair point

i just wrote "fucking" in the end, letting the reader pronounce it in their head as they saw fit

  • Replace the 'ing' with 'en'

  • SRAM Red AXS. I don't want to buy their crankset as a) it's really expensive and b) you have to buy a new complete unit when the rings wear out.

However I would like the arms to be matchy with the rest of the groupset and you can buy them separately.

Any reason why the AXS Red arms, AXS 4 bolt 107bcd spider (power meter or non power) and Force 107 2x chainrings wouldn't work? Am aware it won't be much cheaper but I can spread the purchases out a bit to make me feel like it's not as bad...

Replaceable rings and power upgrade option is what I'm thinking but still "Red" in appearance.

  • Why not FC-RED-C2? 110mm 5-bolt, rings for which will probably be widely available until the heat death of the universe

Edit: missed the power option, but you can't have everything 🙂

  • Good idea 👍 I'm just wedded to the Red AXS arms as a starting point unfortunately.

Edit: I think the old red arms are compatible with the 1x aero chainring. Going to try the Force double option with the AXS arms first.

  • i like getting socks. and hats.

also: people went to the trouble of getting you something, show some fucking appreciation for fucks sake.

    jesus.

  • Too late! Ignore any packages from Canada, I'll remember for next year.

  • Is storing a hat difficult?
It makes me a bit intrigued... Is it a giant sombrero?

  • The massive chip on your shoulder could wear the hat?

  • Could you maybe have a conversation with the people who are most likely to buy you gifts and ask that they make a donation to a charity of your choice instead in the future?
Out of interest, do you feel the same about giving gifts?

  • I buy most things I want because I'm privileged enough to earn enought to do that, amd like you say it's normally specific enough that somebody else buying it will get it wrong.

The last 2 years I've asked people to make donations to my chosen charities in the amount they would have spent on me. It lets them "give a gift", I don't get tat that I then have to sell or donate, and the charity gets a donation. Win-win-win.

  • Yes and no, the washers are included for Shimano post mount 180mm.

I concur with @Emyr, your setup is a bit of suspect!

  • I do try to show appreciation, but I am not a professional actor and it's another obligation being forced on me against my will.

Also, by definition, why the fuck should I be grateful? They have done it because THEY WANT TO, or they've done it because they feel obliged to - neither of which are entirely selfless motives.

Wow. Dude, I’ve been there, particularly with a certain family member who gifted me loads of thoughtful stuff that I didn’t ask for, and most of it felt like a burden I had to receive and then keep or use. It got to the point that i didn’t want to disclose my new address for the better part of a year so they wouldn’t send me unrequested gifts.

If you’ve not read it, you might find ‘The five love languages’ by Gary Chapman to be an interesting read. It’s not hard science mind you, it’s food for thought.

Spoiler alert: giving gifts is some people’s way of expressing affection, and it seems like it’s not yours. For chronic gift givers I’ve found it’s part the rush of buying something, part idleness, part sense of accomplishment at finding something for someone, and mostly wanting to express a feeling.

Do you prefer spending time with people, actively doing things with them, physical touch, or love through words?

I found it useful to identify my own ‘love language’, and express very clearly but politely that I am cutting down on material possessions and that what I actively want is to not receive any new objects at all until new notice. In my case, my message got through and it helped to lower the amount of gifts to a manageable level. I say manageable because I still occasionally get a thoughtful un requested thing, but now it’s much less frequent. All this takes energy, mind, which it sounds like you don’t have much of to devote to this specific issue right now, and that’s fair enough. My validation is as useful to you as the drink in my hand, but you’re fully entitled to not want gifts for whatever reason and to be miffed when people disrespect that wish. Hope you’re able to find a happy compromise if it’s something you want to change.

PS: turns out I had undiagnosed ptsd and was depressed af. Not saying that’s your case, but the levels infuriation and resentment I felt were definitely seated in deeper stuff.

  • Threadless downtube cable bosses: Jagwire Mickeys (or similar), 'normal' ferrule and inline adjusters or mystery third option?

If it makes any difference, the bosses are 6mm ID and cable ferrules (sans cable, admittedly) seem to rattle around in there. I'm hoping the cable tension will keep them seated...

  • Maths wizzes:

I’m trying to convey/‘comprehend’ how massive Graham’s number is, by explaining the first steps to calculate it. Is the following correct?

    G=g64

    3 ^ 3 ^ 3 ^ 3 =
    3 ^ 3 ^ 27 =
    3 ^ 7,625,597,484,987

    g1= 3 ^ (3 ^ 7,625,597,484,987) in a tower (3 ^ 7,625,597,484,987) high?

g2= g1^g1^g1.... creating a tower of ^g1 that is (result of power tower #g1) high?

And so on for g3, g4, and all the way to g64?

Edit- explaining in laypersons terms to other laypeople, leaving aside strictly correct notation. Edit2 with what I think is a corrrction having read the wiki page (missed a tower).

  • Is anyone else being redirected to the NL site for ali?

    https://m.nl.aliexpress.com/store/

Is it to do with Brexit, or just that random thing where you get there via Google and it does something to your cookies? I've had this with Ali RUS before, but can't remember how I resolved it.

  • can't remember how I resolved it.

Does going straight to https://m.aliexpress.com/?site=glo fix it?

  • By ^ do you mean up arrow (↑) or exponent?

Either way I think you've vastly underestimated it:

3↑↑↑3 is 3↑↑(3↑↑3) which is 3↑↑(3²⁷). So a power tower of 3s that is 3²⁷ long.

G1 is 3↑↑↑↑3 = 3↑↑↑(3↑↑↑3). That is 3↑↑(3↑↑(3↑↑(3... this series of numbers is 3↑↑↑3 long and a ↑↑ operation is basically a power tower. At the end of the sequence, you've got 3²⁷, then you form a power tower that is 3²⁷ long, then a power tower that is that long, and so on. You repeat this 3↑↑↑3 times...

    G2 is a 3 followed by G1 arrows and then 3. Graham's number is G64

  • No.

Guess I'll just use a different browser or a laptop.

The thing that made me wonder about Brexit, is that the shop (Sofirn) I was looking at didn't ship almost anything to the UK. But then their actual website shop has UK shipping.

  • I literally have no idea what any of that means. I feel a bit stupid.

  • The arrows you mean? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knuth%27s_up-arrow_notation

For most people it comes under the realm of "maths trivia" because it's never practically useful. You wouldn't have seen it before unless you hang around with maths nerds or read about maths for fun. So I wouldn't feel stupid if I were you.

Graham's number is a fucking massive number that is an upper bound/maximum on the answer to some question about colouring.

  • it's never practically useful

Numbers above about 10184 are of dubious utility, since that's the approximate volume of the observable universe in cubic Planck lengths 🙂
