  • Genuine Q,

I consider myself to have pretty terminal brain worms (stage 5, pushing into my frontal lobe), but I’ve never gotten the chain tensioner hate, they look pretty funky in a kinda outdated mechano aesthetic yet people seem to react worse to them than like, abelism I’m cycling culture

    Can anyone explain?

  • The beauty of a singlespeed/fixed drivetrain is that you don't need a chain tensioner/derailleur. Just a chainring and a freewheel/cog, connected with a chain. It just looks clean. Getting a frame that requires a chain tensioner to set it up singlespeed just screams 'afterthought' to me.

  • I can respect this, approved

  • I hear you.

I wanted a tensioner for a parts bin SSCX race bike. It took a couple of fails before I found/adjusted the right tensioner (budget blown). By far the best were two-arm, sprung types ... so I was basically riding around with an over-priced, under developed rear mech (that doesn’t change gear). All the easy-cleaning, near-zero maintenance and efficiency of SS is lost. It still got hit and full of grass n mud so it was better just to run a few gears.

[ caveat - I’m a hooge fan of fixed on the road but hated singlespeed on trails and general off-road except actual cx races where it was alright ]

  • Fits the unicrown fork.

  • Recently swapped out the old mechanical 105 / Spyre group for a mix of what was in stock - GRX shifters, Ultegra / RX derailleurs, SLX calipers. Sugino OX still going strong after a good few years now. Need to re-bleed the rear as it's still not great but otherwise all working alright.

  • I honestly miss my Niner RLT9 more than any bike I've ever own!

    Great looking bike @Tychom

  • Bit jealous - I’m keen to ditch my spyres / ultegra levers and go hydro in my gravel bike. How much of a difference?

  • @Josh Seeing as mine is an early one, QR, post-mount, only mudguard mounts and nothing else, I had been tempted to move on rather than upgrade it, get something new. But ultimately I decided to stick with it because it really is a good bike and on balance nothing else really grabbed my attention.

@AlexD I never got on with my Spyres. I had them set up with good rotors, Swisstop pads, Jagwire compressionless housing and with very careful setup they'd be ok for a few rides. But soon after with any pad wear at all they'd just lose that perfect set up and be shit again. They alway's needed a lot of effort at the lever to get them to stop, a proper death grip. As for this GRX/SLX combo, I wouldn't say they're any more powerful at the limit- both stop the bike all the same - but it's effortless in comparison to the Spyres.

  • This has been my experience with spyres. I’ve had a few long, bumpy and steep descents recently that have left me with pretty sore hands from clamping down as hard as I can, while being shaken about. It’s just the cost of upgrading to hydro that puts me off. I was even considering those cheap zoom cable actuated hydro brakes to see if they’re any better.

  • yeah thats the version I had. Great bike.

However I realised I have access to a Zyro account and can get Niner on trade, which is very very tempting!

  • I need spacer advice, where we getting out slim 1 1/8 spacers from??

  • where we getting out slim 1 1/8 spacers from?

A few people on here got them from me

  • ti ones from ebay

  • Yep found these almost instantly!

  • What do 25mm of spacers cost these days tester?

  • Same as they ever did. In my world 25mm is 16+8+1 so that's three spacers at £5 ea. and £2.50p&p

Obviously if it were my bike I'd put a headset cover and stem cap on there too

  • Nice stem, who made it?

  • Christmasbiek for my wife.
