I think I'll replace mine before I use it, Will swap it out for a new, longer, bolt and nylock nut

Yesterday was a nice reminder of why I spent so much time forcing mudguards to work on this. I'd been pondering taking them off, but after yday my bike and kit was just in such better condition than my pals'. I'd like curved; GB or similar but I think they'd further limit what I could squeeze in.
The other 'must have' is a gear <1:1, when the riding is as steep and rough as the peak district, sitting and spinning is the only way to get up - the bodged triple-> sub-compact is perfect for this.
Since this bike will never be 'done' my current pondering is whether cowchippers and -1cm of stack would save how the bike looks. Maybe foolish to pursue aesthetics at the cost of function on such a badly proportioned bike.

Where'd you get to yesterday? Photos looked like it was a good day out! Was equally pleased to have guards on the Cheshire lanes but regretted the fully slick gravelkings in the sloppier bits.

We went up Daisy Nook, through Greenfield and around the various climbs around Dovestones. Thoroughly drenched but still a nice day out. There's some good riding if you don't mind the out-and-back climbs around the reservoir. Chew Road in the mist was spectacular.

Nice! Forgot about Chew Road!

I keep idly thinking about changes to this to turn it into my winter road bike:
-tubeless slick 47/48mm tyres
-nice silver guards
-longer and lower positionCombined with bringing my inbred back down from Northumberland so I can still join in gravelly rides.
It's just a case of idle hands though: clip on guards on my actual road bike put me in the position to do any of the riding i'd like to do and mean 0 outlay and faff. Would be good though.

Seeking opinions on the surly forks, it's time to change them up a bit. Options:
-powdercoat to match
-powdercoat to complement
-powdercoat black
-hammerite in black or a dark grey (apparently you can mix the hammered finish paint)More extreme options:
-swap it out for something 'lighter' visually (something lugged like a straggler fork), holding onto it for an inbred/piolet rigid bikepackerPowdercoat to match is my current intention but have a slight reservation that it might be too intense/heavy on the eye.
Builds like this are keeping me convinced the segmented fork can work, though obviously mine is a fair bit burlier:

spray it black and get a straggler fork imo!
then create the single speed all road of your dreams, revisit it all next year when cycling may/may not exist again
-

Powdercoat to match and then declare the bike "done" and joyfully ride it.

you dont get to page 16 of a build thread by having healthy decision making processes, unhelpful comment
-
• #389
Distressingly true though 16 pages over 6 years isn't quite so bad.
Kinda think I have to try this fork in something other than blue before committing to buying another.

they do say black is slimming, maybe some vertical stripes?
-
• #391
I think the current fork looks great as it stands. It's good bike imo.
-
• #392
I’d go black. Standard. Can’t go wrong.

I think I'm going to get it rawed and clearcoated. Check back in a week for the latest decision.

The rims were £8 each when I got them, so I got 3. At the start of lockdown I bought spokes and a 130mm sturmey archer fixed hub. Last night I made my first attempt at lacing a wheel:

I've not been riding, at all, so it seemed like a good time to change things up: if it all goes wrong I'm not costing myself any riding.
Ride #1 was a success - only fell off once. andyp would be proud. Spot all the redundant parts. -

i know you like it because you used your good camera, looks lovely, two tone included

Saw you heading out on Edge Lane. Bike's looking good.

Just come back, we can bimble up and down the middlewood way with our mini trangias infinitely

Thanks! I didn't spot you :(

How are the Race King tyres for general riding?
They both failed at the same point but different parts failed in each case, just in the same place. Weird. Seems clear though that one bolt isn't enough to withstand whatever forces are experienced.
