Serious answer is the cardboard panel reduces flutter behind the ST in a straight line and reduces flow spill between the two sides in yaw situations. Think of it a bit like the shark fin on the F1 cars in 2017. It also packs the gap out slightly. So as hilarious as it might have seemed, it had a marginal gain!
But having said that, the disturbed flow behind the ST would have created less drag when the back wheel passed through it. You’ll have to wait until I’ve figured out how to fire up this old wind tunnel and have a play!
