  • @Hjusth thanks for the help mate, turns out i hadn't quite torqued the crank to spec. Once I'd done that, there was a little bit of derailleur adjustment to do and now it's perfect.

  • What's the term for water occupying the same volume in a tall thin cylinder as in a short wide one?

  • It falls within the realm of inverse square relations; for a fixed volume, the height of a right circular cylinder varies as the reciprocal of the square of the radius.

  • Sure, but for primary school level

  • Lol
Edit- takkng a punt, conservation of mass? (Yes I know it’s nothing to do with volume but it’s the closest I can think of)

  • I've never heard of a specific term for the thing you describe.

  • I have an American Express charge card that I use (mainly) for putting business expenses on, as the requirement to pay everything off before the end of the billing period makes me dig through all my receipts and submit them. I have found that Amex customer service is excellent, and any problems that I've had have been immediately resolved.

I have an HSBC Premier Mastercard for personal use, and for e.g. I used it to buy a bike from YT - thinking to myself that I'll be covered if anything goes wrong. Which I then discovered is sort of true.

20 weeks for them to look at a dispute, then 60 days from the date that you return the paperwork for them to tell you whether or not they agree with you or not - and no updates during that time, only the decision at the end. Which has meant that the only time I asked them for help they've said "wait", and I'm still waiting.

Once I get either the refund from YT or the dispute gets my money back I'm going to close the card, the experience has been sub-optimal. If Amex was accepted more universally it would be a no-brainer to either just use it, or get a credit card from them to go with my charge card, but it's not.

For example YT wouldn't have accepted payment via Amex - if they had, I would not be sat here with no bike and no money.

Therefore my question is - what's a credit card with truly good customer service, that will actually help you out when you need it? Basically, who apart from Amex is as good as they are?

  • Platinum Amex linked to PayPal for online purchases?

  • Has the “we don’t take Amex” problem.

  • I’d like to be able to use it in the real world, and directly.

  • I was going to suggest linking to PayPal. Does that not sidestep the not-taking-Amex problem? As you’re paying with PayPal, not Amex?

Edit: missed you last post. Yeah no good then 🤷‍♂️

  • (Disregard, I don’t know what I’m on about)

  • way up there ^

"Conservation refers to a logical thinking ability that allows a person to determine that a certain quantity will remain the same despite adjustment of the container, shape, or apparent size, according to the psychologist Jean Piaget"

  • The mechanics fixed my front brake using some convex/concave washers, from what I understand they are needed to make the fork and the brake plane square, but do I really need the ones he put on top of the brake ?

  • do I really need the ones he put on top of the brake ?

Yes, because the bolts are at an angle to the caliper. If you didn't compensate with spherical washers under the heads, the bolt head would only make point contact at one side, and it would try to pull the caliper back into parallel with the fork mounting face, which is the thing you're trying to avoid

  • It make sense. Thanks for the explanation!

  • Hosting renewal. I've been with one.com for several years but next year's invoice has just come in at £57. The hosting is for my portfolio site - which is currently down as I'm too lazy to sort it out, so effectively I'm just keeping it for my domain name and email.
I'm also too lazy to research alternative hosting myself - chuck me some recommendations please.

  • I've got a work torch which has a little 2nd torch at the end you pull out. It uses four LR44 AAA button cells in a sheath. I believe they are 1.5V each. It's a bit dim and is running out, so they need replacing. But have not been used much, so I assume will just run out quickly again.

Can I swap these out for something like a 10180?

It seems to be close enough in dimensions and should last longer as well as being rechargeable, right?

I have no real knowledge of batteries, but doesn't 4 (stacked) x 1.5v = 6v? So if a 10180 is 3.6V then it might not be powerful enough.

The thing that prompted me was that my car torch can take either AA or (I think) 18650, which makes the light more powerful.

  • Basically, who apart from Amex is as good as they are?

    No one.

But my experience of Nationwide has generally been excellent - bank and credit card. Their Visa offers a pretty notional cashback, but is still something.

Although it is sort of HSBC ime 1st Direct are good, and poll well. If you're willing to pay for it the private Lloydes accounts sound exceptional based on listening to my colleagues conversations with them. I have absolutely no idea how you go about getting one of those.

Although Coutts are the most obvious one, I think since being bought out they've tried to become a luxury product, so suspect the pricing just isn't worth it and is best used for braggin rights. That said I may be judgemental based on my old company's experience as a business customer after they changed their business model.

  • I use Gandi which seem cheap and good.
