  • It's not so much planning a route but working out diversions due to road closures / unsuitable roads etc as and when you come across them out on a ride. I can normally work out a way round whilst still riding if I zoom out and pan around. Having to stop and check the phone was a real pain on the 530.

True. Being able to work on out-the-fly detours on TPBR with an Edge 1030 when my pre-prepared route tried to send us down a gravel track or along a road we weren't legally able to ride was quite handy. Doing that with a 530 would have been a big PITA. I only really use my 530 on routes I either know, so don't need nav, or where I've done them before so I know that having to re-route on the fly is unlikely.

  • No, that's for pictures of my food from italy to make you jealous.

  • I didn't know they existed but does anyone use magnetic charging cables, leaving the "dongle" bit in the device?

  • Yeah, use it on a Sony phone. I was going to buy them for my Samsung but ended up buying a new phone anyway which had USB-C so never bothered.

  • My Garmin Edge 25 battery is not holding more than 5.5hrs of charge in this cool weather. Sadly I think I need to upgrade.

    Any crazy cybermonday GPS deals?

I think the Edge 530 looks good. It can be charged whilst in use apparently.

  • Does anybody know of an out-front Garmin mount specifically for 26.0 handlebars?
I know most of them come with a shim but was just wondering if there was a neater option.

  • Raceware can prob make you one. They're always up for a random print

  • Nice one, thanks both

  • Also it's pretty nice to support them. They made me a go-pro adapter for my light from scratch the other year for not much money. It's rare you find flexible businesses willing to go a bit further

  • I have a Garmin Edge 1000 that came with Euro maps.

I now live in New Zealand and have no maps.

Is there a solution other than buying a map pack from Garmin? It's not expensive ($19.99) but if there is a better suggestion for map quality i'd maybe go for that

  • Yep, just use open source maps.

You can move the European maps off the SD card on your Garmin to save space as well

Choose a predefined country: Oceania > New Zealand

    Click "Download map now!"

Right click save file: osm_generic_new_gmapsupp.zip and once on your PC extract it

Copy the resulting .img file to the Garmin folder on an SD card in your Edge 1000. You can copy to the device but I always prefer to use an SD so if a map or route is fucked it doesn't bork your unit - you can just remove the SD card.

(I generally leave it set to Generic Routable or maybe openfietsmap at the top but I've not compared them side by side so don't know which is better for different countries)

  • oh that's pretty good. I'll give that a go.

I have a couple of SD cards so i can shift the euro ones on there

  • Thanks dude.

I'll give it a go once my garmin finishes updating in a few hours

  • Thanks guys, got open maps up and running on my Edge 1000, despite the garmin update taking like 21hrs to complete first.

I went for the bicycle routable one, not sure if that's good or bad yet. Seems to be a bit easier to read than the others i had.

  • I've used the OFM maps for TABR and TCR and most other stuff. I think they're pretty good but the "pink line's" contrast on the 1030 when night modes kicks in is maybe a bit worse than the Garmin maps. Does depend what you're surrounded by, ie. town or fields.

  • I went for the bicycle routable one, not sure if that's good or bad yet. Seems to be a bit easier to read than the others i had.

Personally I find the generic routable easiest to read.

  • I put both on mine recently to compare detail. Maybe I should swap it back. I don't really know which is best. I suppose I could go looking for screenshots on 1030s

  • Im going to get a fenix 5s/5s plus and I’m currently deliberating between a refurbished 5s and a second hand 5s plus (the latter being the cheaper of the two). Refurbished gives me a year warranty - what options do I have with second hand? Can I pay for repairs through garmin?

  • Don't really know how much Garmin does repairs. I've sent a second hand watch to them before that conked out, and they essentially give you a discount on a new one (think i ended up paying 95 quid for a new 735xt). It all depends on if they still manufacture the watch or not (in which case it's a voucher kind of system i think)

  • So you were able to send something you bought second hand (eBay, here, wherever, but not a reconditioned with warranty) watch and they replaced with new or reconditioned? That sounds pretty good to me.

  • Yeah exactly, not replaced though - I did have to pay, albeit reduced price.

  • What would a 735 have cost at the time do you reckon? (As in, what percentage of the cost did you pay for the replacement)

  • At the time they were selling for 150 on eBay. It was about this time last year
