  • I have an American Express charge card that I use (mainly) for putting business expenses on, as the requirement to pay everything off before the end of the billing period makes me dig through all my receipts and submit them. I have found that Amex customer service is excellent, and any problems that I've had have been immediately resolved.

I have an HSBC Premier Mastercard for personal use, and for e.g. I used it to buy a bike from YT - thinking to myself that I'll be covered if anything goes wrong. Which I then discovered is sort of true.

20 weeks for them to look at a dispute, then 60 days from the date that you return the paperwork for them to tell you whether or not they agree with you or not - and no updates during that time, only the decision at the end. Which has meant that the only time I asked them for help they've said "wait", and I'm still waiting.

Once I get either the refund from YT or the dispute gets my money back I'm going to close the card, the experience has been sub-optimal. If Amex was accepted more universally it would be a no-brainer to either just use it, or get a credit card from them to go with my charge card, but it's not.

For example YT wouldn't have accepted payment via Amex - if they had, I would not be sat here with no bike and no money.

Therefore my question is - what's a credit card with truly good customer service, that will actually help you out when you need it? Basically, who apart from Amex is as good as they are?

  • Basically, who apart from Amex is as good as they are?

    No one.

But my experience of Nationwide has generally been excellent - bank and credit card. Their Visa offers a pretty notional cashback, but is still something.

Although it is sort of HSBC ime 1st Direct are good, and poll well. If you're willing to pay for it the private Lloydes accounts sound exceptional based on listening to my colleagues conversations with them. I have absolutely no idea how you go about getting one of those.

Although Coutts are the most obvious one, I think since being bought out they've tried to become a luxury product, so suspect the pricing just isn't worth it and is best used for braggin rights. That said I may be judgemental based on my old company's experience as a business customer after they changed their business model.
