  • Thanks for the heads up. I’ll go over it all again.

  • Boiler in the new house has decided not to want to heat the rads anymore. No fault code. Seems like the thermostat is just not giving it a call to heat. Reset the boiler and the control panel. Boiler is set to on in heating mode and thermostat up high (definitely past the "click"). Planning on fitting the Tado thermostat tomorrow, hope that fixes it. Any other ideas what could be wrong? Boiler display just has two dashes, which the instructions say no call for heat.

  • What is the stat wired in to? Usually there is another control box - timer or similar - somewhere else.

  • CH pump given up the ghost?

Although if the boiler says no call for heat it could be the thermostat or boiler circuit board.

Can you hotwire the circuit board on the boiler? With my old boiler the circuit board failed and wouldn't switch on the heating. I ended up having to add a jump cable so the heating circuit was triggered by the HW circuit.

  • Hot wired the thermostat by wiring the wire that was going to 1 in along with the wire going to 3. Still nothing.

  • That's just set to "on"

  • I think I might have solved it. The control panel could be wired backwards. I just turned the hot water on and the boiler kicked in to life, but for the heating. Which means I might have had the hot water on and the heating off. They were both on when we moved in. I only found the control panel the other day.

  • CH pump is going, boiler is firing with the rad symbol flashing. Control unit definitely thinks CH is off and HW is on. Rads aren't hot yet but I'm off to bed. If I'm right, hopefully I just need to swap 1&2 and 3&4 in the controller?

  • Possibly... there might have been a reason it was wired that way...or not :)

  • And this morning rads are cold. Fuck sake. Turned both on to try and get some heat in the house.

  • Motorised valve not fully opening? Often the timer and thermostat open the valve which has a switch and it is the switch output that is wired to the boiler call to heat. When the synchronous motor gets old it doesn't open fully and so doesn't activate the switch.

  • Just read a forum post somewhere else that talked about exactly that. Although since I turned both HW and CH on this morning, rads are heating up.

  • Worth finding out if you have any motorised valves and where they are. They can get unreliable with age but changing the motor or head is easy if you are comfortable with electrics.

  • Thanks, I'll take a closer look once ms_com gets up. Hard to diagnose faults with something you don't fully understand while a toddler screams at you for doing other basic things wrong.

    I concur.

The valves were fucked on ours so the previous or their man had permanently set the heating circuit on and they were using the immersion for hot water. Control box and stat did nothing - the boiler would burn until it was powered off.

“Oh no we’ve never had any problems with the central heating...”

Ripped the whole lot out in week 3 - new tank, boiler, control box, Tado on the rads. New vertical flue when we do the roof in March.

  • Boiler is relatively new, in warranty and service a month ago. I asked the guy some questions about controls and he was very vague, now I see why.

Next question. LED GU10s for the kitchen, Cool White or Daylight?

  • seven months (!) what are you building, an office block ?! ours were here for three months - was definitely over it by that point even. can't imagine how pish a seven month build would be - you have my sympathies.

  • peeped this yesterday in stories. looking good

  • You've for me questioning it now, for sure. I'll test it later to see what heats up when.

  • I’m on month 7 now. Should be finished in another 6 weeks

  • daylight every time. cool white + kitchen surfaces always feels like a vivarium.

  • thoughts & prayers 🙏🏼

  • I only kind of skim read the shutter chat the other day (will re read it later). Painting the dining room at my dad's house at the moment and having binned the old faded curtains, there's so much more light that gets in even though they only took a little bit of the window each side. But ££££ less from what I skim read to not get shutters. Could get some kind of vertical blind using the existing curtain rail? Lounge bay window is just a curtain job

  • Have a guy who can come out tomorrow to look at the heating. Is it worthwhile me trying to take the motorized head off and turning the valve manually to see if it loosens up or just wait for the pro?

Thanks to @Aroogah for the recommendation.
