In other news, I can’t stop looking at a black Explorer II, to the point where I’m close to compromising my principles and paying grey prices for a new or nearly new one. Can anyone either talk me out of it or alternatively recommend somewhere to source one?

reddit.com/r/watchexchange is your friend. Even with courier fees and imports it'll be cheaper than buying grey.

Or just get a Grand Seiko SBGN003.

Assuming you mean the current model, have you tried talking to an authorised dealer or five? I’m not sure quite how in demand they are compared to the GMT, Daytona, Sub or even the Explorer I. It may be attainable with patience.
