  • Ha! Thanks - I wasn't sure if i had a photo of it on here?

  • Gonna pick something up today that has a lot of AX on it...

  • I bought a bike with the intention of selling it or its components right away. However, I might stick to it... Pics tomorrow hopefully.
    Tease:

    • it's branded as Zagers (no idea, some local Dutch shop's rebranding I suppose)
    • 2x5 speed, Shimano 600 AX and Adamas AX components, with some Campag brake levers
    • Teardrop-shape downtube and oval toptube
    • Concor saddle
    • SR Laprade aero seatpost

Frame is straight, but there's some surface rust here and there.

The bike has been sitting in a shed for the better part of the last 20 years, therefore I expect the seatpost and the stem to be brutally frozen - hope it's not the case though. Will see tomorrow.

  • Frame's underside is rather rusty. Stem wasn't frozen, seatpost bolt is currently taking a WD40 bath.

  • Obviously needs some cleaning. Parts aren't really worn, cogs and chainrings are nearly pristine.

  • Coming apart pretty well. Seatpost bolt loosened, seatpost is of course frozen, but I believe it will come out without much of a hassle, as there's not much of it inside the frame. Drive side pedal is seized as well, I'll soak it overnight. Non-drive side was stuck too and it came off easily after a bit of soaking.
Rims are blue anodized Ambrosio Élites, hubs are Maillard, freewheel is branded as S.Y.

No idea how I'mm gonna remove the bottom bracket, probably I'll just leave it as it is.

Thinking about selling the cockpit and the AX stuff apart from the crankset, and building it up as a single speed. Frame won't sell for much with all that rust anyways.
Fingers crossed I can get that seatpost out...

  • Can't really tell, but is it an 'aero' downtube on that frame?

edit: you said in a previous post. must get eyes tested :-)

  • Yep, all aero everything! Don't worry, even I get lost among all this rambling haha.

  • Drive side pedal out (60 cm long wrench extension helped a bit, thanks vacuum cleaner), seatpost still won't move. Oh well, let's soak it.

BB got out easily, but its cups require a Shimano TL-FW20 (or identically shaped) tool, which I'm hunting for on the cheap at the moment.

Thankfully the rust didn't eat through the frame (at least at the bottom bracket area).
Things are getting cleaned up nicely. After all this hassle I'm really considering keeping the frame at least - given the seatpost and the BB shells come loose.

Repacked the front wheel too, rear one will need a freewheel remover first...

  • Nice! Looking forward to seeing this come together.

  • Cheers! I'm looking forward to see it come apart first haha.

Meanwhile I've repacked these nice SR vintage racing pedals.

  • The chemical bond between the seatpost and the seat tube is too strong, and I can't be arsed to fiddle with ammonia or pour coke into the seat tube, it's just too much of a mess. Tomorrow I'll take the bike to the nearest car mechanic and ask them to air hammer the hell out of it. If it still won't give in, I'll just saw it out.

  • Alrighty then.

  • Gotcha. After all this sweat, blood, more sweat, and a bit of tears I don't even want to sell it anymore.

  • It feels like one of those frames where the ££ you’d get from selling it wouldn’t be worth it and you should keep it. That’s exactly how I’d justify another bike to my family, anyway.

  • Cheers lads! Yeah, it's a keeper for sure. Project will be a slow burner though.
Ordered some "modern" black/silver brake levers from China for starters, and I'm gonna buy some Decathlon 25.4 compact drops while they last.
    Thinking of:

    • white bar tape
    • silver stem
    • black handlebars
    • silver seatpost
    • white cable housing
    • 6 speed freewheel

But first I still need to get a ton of aluminium dust out of the BB shell. Not an easy task with the BB cups still there.

  • Rear derailleur overhauled and cleaned thoroughly (finally the jockey wheels can spin properly). Damn it was hard to get it back together! The spring system is a tad different and obviously less sophisticated than modern ones. I also managed to mostly clean up the aluminium dust from the BB shell.
Gonna put it together tomorrow and then it's pictures time.

  • Gonna buy something like Evaporust, and get those remaining rusty screws and bits cleaned.

  • In the meanwhile I might have bought a Koga-Miyata... with a carbon 1" straight fork! It's ratty as sin and most components are covered with a thick layer of grime, but it should be pretty nice once I finish cleaning it.

  • I bought this Koga-Miyata with the sole intention of a quick strip-n-sell. I literally hadn't realized until I got home that it has a carbon fork (or it might be carbon-alu composite something like on my old B'twin). Bear with me, it was a huge rainstorm when I bought it.

The state of the bike is absolutely shameful. Loose headset-bb-front hub, many layers of thick grime, even though I got lots of it off already. Pretty sure the Acera rd is bent, but the cable is frayed so badly that I couldn't test its shifting at all. STIs seem to work. Chainrings are very worn too.

Now for the good stuff: frame and fork both seem to be perfectly straight, no bent dropouts, no dents, so that's good. Seatpost isn't stuck either. Pedals got out without a fight too. Brakes work surprisingly well, even grimy like this. The wheels cleaned up very nicely actually. Nothing fancy, Sora 3300 hubs with some laced into some "aero" rims, but they do work, and they aren't worn to hell. Hubs need grease though.

No clue what to do with it. I fell in love with the frame and fork already. It's exactly my size too... Single speed I guess? Quill stem, risers? Won't plan very early as the BB is absolute toast and its cups might be stuck beyond saving. Who knows.

  • Keep it geared! Ratty road bike. Wont be hard to find a 1055 (?) rear mech for cheap. Maybe 1x it with a cheap stronglight ring or something?

  • Really leaning towards a singlespeed setup actually... Have two geared bikes already that I don't wanna sell in the near future.
Could use the black quill stem from the Zagers with a riser bar. With a matchy black seatpost of course.

  • Just ordered tools and tinkering stuff: work stand, breaker bar, BB and headset tools etc. Finally I'll be able to do mostly everything for myself, really excited!

  • Selling the components from the Zagers after all to fund the Koga:
