Choose a predefined country: Oceania > New Zealand
Click "Download map now!"
Right click save file: osm_generic_new_gmapsupp.zip and once on your PC extract it
Copy the resulting .img file to the Garmin folder on an SD card in your Edge 1000. You can copy to the device but I always prefer to use an SD so if a map or route is fucked it doesn't bork your unit - you can just remove the SD card.
(I generally leave it set to Generic Routable or maybe openfietsmap at the top but I've not compared them side by side so don't know which is better for different countries)

I have a Garmin Edge 1000 that came with Euro maps.
I now live in New Zealand and have no maps.
Is there a solution other than buying a map pack from Garmin? It's not expensive ($19.99) but if there is a better suggestion for map quality i'd maybe go for that
