I play bass so the weight issue crops up more but for me hard cases are great if you're arriving at every gig in the car/van but if you've got to walk or get public transport with your guitar the premium soft cases are way more useful!
I've got a Mono M80 bass case and it's great, the build quality is really high and the protection is substantial.
I've also got a Thomann faux-leather thing which isn't terrible considering how cheap it is.

Gig bags / cases. What does everyone prefer? Any brand recommendations?
My Japanese "Telemaster" came with a pretty crap gig bag that offers very little protection, so I want to upgrade it but I've checked out the Fender vintage-style hard cases and they seem really poorly made these days. Maybe I've been spoiled in the past, the one I have my '90s Tele in is great but I don't know if that was the original.
