  • Ooft, quite some rap sheet!

  • It's the rarity. If you look on howmanyleft.co.uk it suggests there's 23 licensed.

  • Cool site! I realised when I saw it was a 7 series with silly things like the phone in the centre rest that it probably wasn't that common a car. Still, don't quite see it myself.

  • No mention of corrosion in the fail or repair Just brakes need sorting, wheel bearings repacking and shackle pin some undersealing.

  • Nice Commer van, iirc they were also used as filming cars by the beeb back unt day.

Seem to sell for not astronomical monies, check this one on ebay my boss has one and she loves it although never seems to complete a trip without breaking down.

  • Did you check out the V50?

  • Rarity as a complete item, and as a donor for the M73 V12 that mad Scandinavians cram into E30’s and the like.

  • Has anyone with a Skoda Yeti had a bike in the back with the rear seats down or taken out? How did the bike fit in? Do you need to remove the front wheel or will it fit with it turned sideways? Considering getting one.

I borrowed one once. Liked it for how practical it was. I took the right hand back seat out (the bigger of the two) and put two bikes next to each other standing up with the front wheels off, and a trailer wedged in the gap too. We needed the other back seat for a passenger, and the rest of the space behind that for luggage. With both the seats out I’d imagine there would be a pretty usable space for bikes, but never tried it the way you described.

    Edit: looks like you can

  • That one looks like a later Dodge Spacevan that has been fitted with older Commer parts to make it look more classic.

  • More you use them, the better they are.

Still around in the early 80...and worth very little in the early 90 when compared to the transit or LDV.

  • Also the McClaren used a bmw v12 so people remove the engine to transplant in to strange cars.

  • As I repeat myself, the MG 1600 maestro was a fucking great car. The carbs off the car were worth more than the rest of the car. Amazing how they rusted and no idea if they talked to you...I know that the plastic bumper mk1 montego randomly said things as you were driving along. I wanted to change the module so it spoke forin.

  • @bq @lynx tbf I don't know much about them, my boss has told me the Commer is more practical than a T2 more space on the inside. I went through a whole lets buy a hipster/old/rusty camper phase last year, was on the cusp of buying the attached T2 last year with loads of new panels and new mig welder for 3k. Had a really weird viewing and chickened out in the end.

Love a Commer... British too :) That one from Ebay looks great buy it @bq ;)

I don't own a Yeti, but many moons ago Cycliste and I hired one for a trip to the Dolomites. We folded the back seats down and, IIRC, took the front wheels off and laid the bikes down flat on top of each other in the load space. Room enough for them and luggage.

  • In my defence, I forgot the family owned an ex bt dodge van.

Lucky escape as a decent welder is the £7-800 with consistant wire feed and variable weld strength and can still weld at 200v and 8 amps........at the end of an extension cable.

  • V50?

No it was sold before I had a chance. Still on the lookout

I don't have the time or skills to do it myself, I reckon that's easily a grand or more and I spent £1200 last year as well - time to cut my losses I think

  • There is also the steering column which sounds like a total ballache to change

  • Totally makes sense. Last year in the bushfires we were very nearly stuck with one road out, a very rutted gravel road... Our Audi with 19's, bugger all ground clearance would have been stuck. we tried driving down the road and gave up about 500metres in. Lucky the fire diverted and we could use the paved road. Highlighted how stupid our car is and why we should get an allroad/alltrack/outback

  • Shit the bed, that’s pretty scary.

  • Wow. Definitely a legit reason to have a 4x4!

  • Lucky escape there, although I’m digging the Borbet ‘A’s. Must have hubs off something else?

I went through a Commer phase a while ago and learned all about them, but it’ll never happen as Mrs Q hates campers. And I hate camping. It would have been a Le Mans bus, really. Still I did find out that a Vauxhall Ecotec V6 from an Omega would fit in the engine bay, and was wondering about a Ford BOB Cosworth V6, as the lower tech Scorpio seemed like an easier car to use as a donor. You could probably convert and still keep it within the 8 points to avoid IVA if you were careful.

  • Bought a cheap Commer camper in the early 90's. Was a frightening catalogue of issues from 5 mins into ownership. It didn't last long before I had to write it off. Fun while it lasted though. If I knew then what I know now I'd probably have managed to keep it running.

  • Yeah, very much so. Especially with the kid in the back. Hopefully we won't have fires like that again though.
