I have to say that I carried on drinking it last night and the more I drank the more I appreciated it.
Not sure I would buy another bottle in a hurry as there are so many other whisky/whiskeys out there but once I was expecting the taste it wasn't so jarring.

one kilo of fruit cake that contains at least a cup of The Glenlivet 15, with more to come through feeding...smells of caramel and vanilla, and whisky of course

my whisky tasting club is turning Japanese this Friday. It's open season on which one we go for.
Any recommendations on a decent but reasonably priced one for a newbie to Japanese whisky that I can pick up somewhere by Friday evening?

Asking you as you seem quite well informed on this but anyone welcome to chip in.

Ha, If you had read my comments from a few pages back about Japanese whisky you might not have ;)
If you've never had any japanese whisky then you can't go too wrong with Hibiki Harmony or Nikka from the barrel, they're pretty good representations of the Japanese style and you can usually find them in any supermarket that has a half decent whisky section. I don't think I know anyone that hasn't liked those two.
The problem with Japanese whisky is anything with an age statement is going to cost more that £100 at the cheapest.

oh yes I read them but even having the knowledge to slate them is more than I know about them.
Will see what I can find, cheers

If you were doing your whisky tasting in person (I'm assuming it's virtual at the minute) then it'd be a decent shout for you all to chip in and buy a yamazaki 12 but it's definitely not worth 125 sheets imo.

Anyone tried The Glenlivet Illicit Still 12? Just nabbed a bottle for Christmas.

If I have 50 quid and know nothing about bourbon beyond the fact I like it. Where do I start?

Always start with UTFS!
(Just kidding, but there are good suggestion in this thread when this has been asked before)
Personally, I like the price point of Woodford Reserve and Makers Mark, both of which seem to be available for around GBP 20 in UK supermarkets at the moment. This is extra important if you don't have any whisky/whiskey in and need it in time for Christmas. I am currently in this position myself.

Buy a bottle of forester at £20 and a bottle of Evan Williams at a little bit more. And then some bitters and some oranges.

Not a borboun but at £20 I have gentleman Jack a punt yesterday. Works in old fashioneds too.

There's probably plenty of people on here that know much more about Bourbon than me but at the 50 quid mark American Eagle 12 is a good shout as is Makers Mark 46.
Also, I know it's not strictly a bourbon and this might be controversial but I actually quite rate Jack Daniels single barrel.

High West stuff is good around that price point if you can find it in the UK. I've had Rendezvous Rye, Campfire and Double Rye.
Double Rye was my favourite. Depends if you like spicy Rye I guess

Makers Mark 46
Seconded
That works for me. My mate said he's got it duty free a couple of times and said it was decent. I just didn't have room to grab it. I'll go back for it.
