yeah, what I dont understand is whether I can tell them to take it down now, or whether they have a right to keep it up until their contract ends

You can ask them nicely but you cannot tell them to take it down.

Suspect that even if it was contract voiding to not do what you ask a ‘technical issue’ would mean it would still be on the portals.
