I love β€˜em. Also we have a series of habitat investigations ( not just bats) on going at our site in Westminster to establish summer roosting sites. This involves night time study of entry / exit with our ecology team between 2 - 4 am

All bats in the UK are protected by law, something we are taught in construction.

The pigeons however have to be shot dead if established, no other remedy

I could start a thread on London Ecology with the stuff we have learnt.

  • I don't suppose this sort of thing helps the bat reputation.

  • The bat was practically begging to be eaten if you ask me

  • Nightshift and went down a internet worm hole on echolocation. That and the blob opera got me through the night.

Visually impaired man using echolocation to ride a bicycle, just amazing.

  • Anyone know of any good spots to observe bats in North London? Closer to Holloway the better please.

  • Any place where there is water and green as they find their food at dusk on the water edge.

Hyde Park and the Serpentine is my favourite πŸ¦‡ watching location.

This. I used to stop for ages on the walk back to student halls, years ago. There are several spots on the Kensington Gardens side too (if the gates are still open in the evening) where it's great to stand and watch.

We're a bit lucky where I live now too - they just fly round our house almost every night (but this is in East Anglia)

  • Good start!

I bought a bat detector electronics kit and thought it best to test it where there should be bats.

Do you get bats by the sea?

  • Bats at my mum's house by the sea so I'm going to guess yes. Unless there's something special about my mum's house. Quiet at the back there.

  • Anyone willing to recommend a Bat Detector?

    What do I need?
Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve has not had a formal bat survey for many years,
    but,
reputedly we have 14 different species previously observed.

  • I dont think the uk has 14 types but get a digi one with an ear piece. Digi will show the frequency thus the type
    Mag 5

  • Counterpoint...we have one of these manual analogue ones and find reading the dial and then looking at a list of different frequencies for each species in the locak area is ample or identification for us.

If you're near to SE10, you'd be welcome to borrow it for a while.

  • 14/18.
    Must do better?

  • That is a really kind offer.
With a post code of HA4, we are virtually 180 degrees apart,
but less than 25 miles away.
Let me ponder over the weekend.
    Weekday collection available?

  • I stand corrected .

  • No. Have seen one in action though locally, looked good. The basic one is cheaper from https://www.nhbs.com/

Should add it was an older iOS version, that they now have discontinued.

  • Happy to put in the post if you can get it back to me before Feb 18th...
