  • Grr. I was told by the organizer that their wouldn't be room. Wish I could have just followed Lincoln in.

  • Damn, just seen this thread. Would have loved to have gone along.

Yeah..I've 'ad that Maurice Burton on the back of my derny...

I was derny training a month or two back and he was there with his son. Didnt realise until I read this article:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/environmen...ng-white-sport

which lead me to google and read:
    http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/defaul...lstory&id=3596

His son was *well *strong. Dont know how old he is, but cant be more than 14 or 15. I dropped off the back of the derny many, many laps before him.
I hope he sticks with cycling because he'll be a superstar for sure.

  • yeah his son was there germaine i think he said he was 14. the interviewer was alright and the questions and answers after were good as he spoke very openly about all aspects of his racing career and a moment in his career that he will hold dear - when merckx asked him to let him win a race.
the room was packed and it was an even split of bike geeks and black history month supporters.

  • moment in his career that he will hold dear - when merckx asked him to let him win a race.

    Thats pretty cool!

  • sounds like it was really interesting. I saw him out on his bike on Sunday.

  • Late thread spot. Did anyone make it there?

  • I did - it was great to hear him talk about his experiences. He seems to be a really together kind of guy.

Oh, and yeah, the quote about Merckx was a classic!

  • oh and another thing, maurice burton stayed until the very end and was even talking to folk outside after the doors had been locked. what a gent, what a trooper.
i have so much respect for him.

  • Did you get to tape the interview? I would like to hear it if at all possible

veLLo did but i wouldnt bank on it being very good only because the microphones or at least the guests microphone was so poor. that was my only criticism of the event.

  • Coppi: 'I have so much respect for him'

    +1
I learnt a lot from what he said, he made sure he mentioned the names of plenty of other riders who he respected, and he didn't shy away from commenting on hoary old (but difficult) stuff like drugs in cycling. Shocking info contrasting the continental attitude to cyclesport with the casual British style back in the day. Well-meaning but very amateur team mechanics. GB team sponsorship consisting of a set of tyres!

Nice dry sense of humour as well. Unlike G, I never got some of his old kit and one of his own bikes directly from him, just had a nice De Ver frame for a while. But really, an easy person to respect. Nice family too, they were there.

  • Saw Maurice today at the cycle show, he didn't stop to chat much though

:-) he must have been all talked out from the other night.

i asked veLLo about his recording of the interview, will add something to this thread when he gets back to me.

  • Reposting because Bill tweeted about it and I just read the article and thought it worth bumping.
    http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/default.asp?pg=fullstory&id=3596

  • bump: because it is Black History Month again, but also because the http://www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk/ website has been hacked/ddos'ed for the last two days.

Not sure if Vernon could do with some IT help, but there may be some people here who may be of use. See the thread: https://twitter.com/ppvernon/status/1047060184223440896
