• No me either :D The grips are more vibrant / bright teal than the pic shows. I was excited to find matching cables but really can’t picture what they’ll go on. Maybe a grey frame? I don’t really yearn after a grey frame.

  • I had a "French Grey" Hobbs from the 40s, apparently very fashionable back in the day.

  • Crazy expensive

  • I wish..!
that Hobbs Blue Riband is lovely and one of my favourite builds on that site. Consequently I've found myself on that page a few times.

  • I like the grips and it's a great colourI think they will look great with any colour once worn in.

  • Yep it’s a lot and in the States. Been listed for at least a year I think, found it looking for Blumfield hubs! Really a lot to get my hands on a large flange front.

  • Thanks, yep, they’ll find a bike one day.

Agreed re the Hobbs, lovely bike, nice with the red bars.

  • I know it's not a bike but thought I'd share my newest project, installing a Bakelite doorbell in our 1930s home.

  • Oh yes that's right up my street that lovely.
Is the front door in keeping with the same theme

  • Certainly is! When we bought the house, it had a more modern door installed however secured an original off a lovely gentleman up the road who was swapping his out for a more modern one last year. Need to do the side panel now but that can wait.
Need to sort out a transformer and chime/Bell now.

  • that's nice. I've got some Bakelite light fittings in my kitchen that my Dad cleared out of my Grandpa's workshop when my Grandparents had both died. (He was an electrician). Nice to have some of his old kit in the house.
My door also has an old doorbell with original mechanical bell you have to rewind after every time it's rung, but that came on the door. I think it might be 30s but couldn't say for sure. Lovely though.

  • Pennine cycles bike in original paint etc. 50's or maybe 60s. Just check out those lovely seat stay top eye painted details,

  • Would love to see the light fittings!

  • The Chater Lea front hub, with track nut. The drop out is attached to 1947 road forks for aligning purposes. It's not a chrome finish, there just isn't any paint on the forks.
Note the oiler in the end of the hub axle.
It's a beautiful looking hub and the nut fits snugly into the Chater Lea dropout.(I think it a Chater lea dropout).

  • Some oddments to clear out, one of you chaps may have need, not I! Two c/p front hangers, one the Mafac q/r type, handy! Single Mafac, pair Weinmann c/p inner cable yokes. Pair external cable clamps with unusual bird engraving. Decent chamfered bb lockring, undamaged. Rear derailleur cable stop. Pump peg.

PayPal me a fiver and I'll post you the lot!

  • If your sure I will take the lot thanks @harman_mogul

  • Sure I'm sure. I'll PM you my PayPal ID

  • Very nice! Your build yeah? I really enjoy the CL nuts 👌 Do you have a rear?

  • So no one outbid me on that Gillott I clicked on in a moment of madness. Spent the weekend cleaning 60 years of filth off it!

The guy I picked it up from said the owner is in a home now. He had lots of bikes, Hetchins etc, attic full of wheels, but this was his favourite/ his daily rider. Might see if I can get his address write him a letter (“I broke up your bike and flogged it on Ebay“ 😬).

Quite poignant unpicking his 60 years of components, especially the moment I thought about it with my face pressed on the saddle!

The frame is thick with dirt and paint so haven’t got in to that beyond the 1960 date stamp on the steerer. Hoping a Ron Cooper Mark is hidden under the paint. Lugs are nice and sharp but top tube is well crushed. I’ll see if Argos can roll it or do some other magic. Don’t really want to pay for a new tube.

The components are a 30 year tour of Campag’s greatest hits. First generation steel Record seatpost (1956ish), 3 piece Gran Sport lf front hub, first gen Record derailleurs (1963 I think), 3 arm chrome Sport cranks (1971), and after wrestling off the 1983 Regina freewheel under the dirt a Hi-Lo rear hub! (similar date to the freewheel I think). Also nice Titan stem and bars dated 68/69, half a nice Stronglight headset.

Not really sure what to do with it all. I was toying with putting it all back on, but all a bit on the heavy side.

Maybe just the derailleurs, rest on Ebay, ... finance some period wheels.

Edit: I have previously lusted after a Hi-Lo, never thought I’d lump up to buy one though. Very tempted to keep it.

  • Sure do. Will take some pictures as the build continues.

  • FYI
Turns out Aluvac chainrings are cheap rubbish, I had total mechanical failure coming up Black heath hill on my way home from work. See photo for disintegrated chainring, it's only a couple months old.
I was carrying a pheasant and a guinea fowl and a bottle of wine, but even still?
