  • It's a long read and you need a drink, but this is a good summary of what January might look like.

    https://www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2020/12/10/everything-you-need-to-know-about-day-one-of-brexit

The language is just unbelievable "“It was put to me that this was kind of a bit like twins, and the UK is one twin the EU is another, and if the EU decides to have a haircut then the UK is going to have a haircut or else face punishment" Wut???

  • All these doomsters and gloomsters, it’ll all be fine, with a bit of plucky British bulldog spirit and a little vim and vigour we will prosper mightily.

    Or, not.

  • “It was put to me that this was kind of a bit like twins, and the UK is one twin the EU is another, and if the EU decides to have a haircut then the UK is going to have a haircut or else face punishment"

Put by whom? A total fucking idiot, with no concept of what constitutes an analogy? Or is 'kind of a bit' now synonymous with 'nothing'?

  • And I complain about my job...reading that i can only conclude customs / certain government / certain business roles are going to be a massive headache next year.

  • His own idiot head if you ask me.

  • Has a country ever voted, repeatedly, to fuck itself up in such a drastic way before?

    It's unfathomable.

  • I find it amazing people still defend brexit after its completely no longer what was promised.

Originally I smelt bullshit hugely but the government leave campaign promised access to single market Yadda Yadda.

Now that those people are actually in power...it's fine. All is forgotten.

How can you have such low self esteem that you love this sort of treatment I honestly don't know...it's gone well last the "it's complicated / political engineering" phase.

The power of carefully engineered fear and hate...

  • It’s such a great idea; look at the queue of other countries who also want to leave the EU now we’ve shown its possible. Oh.

  • I can appreciate that the proponents of brexit don't want to be tied into EU regulatory systems. That wasn't supposedly a major reason for leaving (after the racism and xenophobia obvsly).

I'm shocked that the UK's bargaining position doesn't appear to be as strong as they claimed.

  • I can appreciate that the proponents of brexit don't want to be tied into EU regulatory systems.

And yet, in my experience, are singularly unable to identify any EU Regulation that they actually think it either unnecessary or fundamentally wrong.

  • Has a country ever voted, repeatedly, to fuck itself up in such a drastic way before?

After Brexit I felt quite cheerful the USA had elected Trump in a sort of 'hold my pint' kind of way. However, they only did that once. So now I'm less cheerful. While still glad the Giant Orange Babyman is going to be out of office soon.

  • The issue is that the EU regulations are fundamentally right and the UK government doesn't want to be forced to maintain either current or future standards.

  • Sadly the populace has largely swallowed Johnson's lies, while a journalist, about straight bananas and banning sausages.

  • Venezuela? US? Zimbabwe?

  • EU regulations are fundamentally right

    https://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:31988R1677:EN:HTML

But yeah on the whole most regulations benefit most people.

  • Well that has me thinking it's worth rebuilding my stock pile.

  • The most logical explanation for Brexit is to allow the UK economy to continue to act as the Worlds best money laundering and off-shore tax avoidance centre.
EU legislation will hinder these dubious activities.

  • EU legislation will hinder these dubious activities.

The Swiss had that same thought a long time ago.

  • The Swiss had that same thought a long time ago.

And yet have been spending 10 years or so doing what they can to reduce the amount of external money flowing into Switzerland and removing privacy protections for international investors.

  • I am raging at the pathetic inadequacy of our government. They are the worst shower of useless, lying, slimy cunts. Fuck them all.

  • I wish I still had the energy to rage. I'm so exhausted by it, I just feel so totally meh, whilst trying to be angry.

I read this too, an old blog from 2016, can't recall how I found it, could have been this thread, but it scared the crap outta me.

    https://www.conservativehome.com/thecolumnists/2016/06/garvan-walshe-vote-remain-or-risk-turning-britain-into-argentina.html

  • TBH it's been the 'australia deal' usage that has tipped me over the edge. And David Davis. And IDS. And Liz Truss and Raab and Gove and Mogg and all the other fucking useless lying cunts who are going to be immune from the damage they are doing and will fuck off when it all goes to shit with some non-exec gig at a mate's company who have been creaming it off government contracts.

  • Interesting thought but I’d say the UK runs little risk of becoming Argentina. For one, the US and the EU both want a (relatively) prosperous and stable UK, whereas the US, Brazil, and Euro powers did quite a bit to help destabilise Argentina. Given Britain’s nukes and membership in NATO, there would likely be considerable efforts by other countries to avoid a collapse in the UK like in Argentina.

Personally I’m concerned about UK institutions being chopped up and sold for parts. US health management organisations want to come and replace the NHS, Big Poultry wants to sell us pink slime, and Texas oilers would frack under London itself if they assessed there was a profit to be made. Would the Tory government stop them, or take a slice of the pie?

Walshe comes across as a bit disingenuous in claiming that Argentinean elites are selfish and self-serving, while British elites are historically preoccupied by what is good for the common man. It’s not a coincidence that Marx polished his theories over the 20 years he spent in London. I don’t see the point in him demonising populists for harkening back to rose tinted glory days, and then doing the same thing.
