  • Filling and smoothing my wall went as badly as expected. Bumpy as shit and each time I tried to rectify it I made it a bit worse. Going to have a try with a sander and some fine grit sandpaper to see if it can be retrieved.

  • Does anyone know a hard-wearing floor paint that is colour matchable? For painting wooden stairs.

Oil based is fine, I just don't want to use something that will constantly need touching up.

Non-slip would be good too, but most of those products come in only two or three colours.

  • That's what I'm looking to do. The kitchen floor and the front path has to come up anyway so hopefully I can time it with that.

  • I don't understand what you did there. is that plaster? Sheetrock? Dry wall? I can't tell.

usually when repairing large holes one would have mesh to support the mud, or replace a section of the drywall and then tape and sand the edges.

  • Sisal with chrome rods

  • I've got a bunch of rods you're welcome to as we removed our runner

  • £much?
I was blessed/cursed with lead in my first place. Couldn't get the Water Company to replace the feed, but got an oldschool plumber to joint in copper and I took it from there.

  • Plaster and an external wall.

The plastering to fill the big hole part went ok, it's the trying to get it all smooth afterwards which is the ballache.

It looks a lot better after sanding but there's still bits around the sockets which I'm struggling to get right.

  • Could you joint in your new pipe to the pipe just prior to the outside stop tap?

  • Ugh. Boiler. Glow Worm Ultimate 30c.

Gas supply fine to our hob. Electrics fine downstairs and nothing tripped on consumer unit.

Small spur with light underneath boiler. No light visible on it.

No text display on boiler, reset buttons, power on/off on the spur does nothing, no hot water/heating.

Was raining heavily today and heating worked fine until this eve when we tried to use hot water.

Fuse gone on spur if light not showing?

    PCB? Other?

  • so there's lath there under the plaster? that's a complex fix usually with working with the lath.

you can skim coat joint over the plaster compound. easier to finish.

sorry I'll bow out. I think I'm confused.

  • The neon indicators aren't very reliable. I wouldn't read too much into it not being on. Can you test with a multimeter?

  • You'd need to fault find on it, get a professional although is it under warranty if so call glow worm and get them out.

And i wouldnt just jump to a PCB off the start either as that'll be pricey.

  • I have bought Farrow & Ball floor paint in the past, it's been quite durable. Not sure if they still do it but I'm seeing a wood floor primer so possibly top coat is available. Otherwise lots of options with limited colours. Grey seems popular.

  • First step has to be checking the continuity on the 13amp fuse in that spur. Then replace if it's not working. If it had blown you would have to ask yourself why.

  • Maybe one for the structural enginners, but how stable would a bed with three legs be, with 2 at the head and one at the foot? This would be a narrow single, about 70cms wide with 30cm tall legs.

  • If you perched one one end corner it could be a tad wobbly. Not that I'm a strucutal engineer, but just applying some basic trig. If you're careful it should be OK. But why would you want to? Weirdly shaped room?

  • But why would you want to?

Stability while lying down, floor is kinda wonky.

Mostly though, I'm an idiot who's willing to share my ideas to right thinking types. They elicit reactions that are always interesting and often helpful.

  • Workbenches were being discussed up thread.

You’d need to spend as much in tools as you would on buying a workbench to build this but there’s no denying this is very satisfying to watch.

  • Anyone used this polyfilla undercoat, any good? https://www.homebase.co.uk/polycell-3-in-1-basecoat-2-5l_p187677 Homebase has an annoyingly limited range of undercoats beyond the basics (none of the Zinnser stuff is in stock).

  • How about 4 legs, with adjustable feet?

  • adjustable feet

How uneven is this floor?! Some neatly cut cardboard shims/spacers would usually do the trick.

  • Thanks for the concern, but this was a long time ago, in my first ever place.
As I remember it, the old school plumber gave himself about four inches of working room,
from where the lead pipe emerged into the underfloor space,
(I had lifted several floor boards in the kitchen to give him all the access he needed).

  • ...this one is going to be done using all hand tools...

    Love watching these things, but in my head hand tools are;

    Rather than

  • Thanks re. boiler tips above - assuming the worst, what's a good combi to replace with?
3 bed terrace. Currently the GlowWorm Ultimate 30c - we moved in about 3 years ago, don't know when previous owners installed. Would kind of like to try out Nest or some other smart thermostat - currently a clunky low battery Samsung thermostat. (Thermostat still turns on btw so am assuming just because it's flashing low battery doesn't mean the boiler won't work? Or will it?)
