usually when repairing large holes one would have mesh to support the mud, or replace a section of the drywall and then tape and sand the edges.
Plaster and an external wall.
The plastering to fill the big hole part went ok, it's the trying to get it all smooth afterwards which is the ballache.
It looks a lot better after sanding but there's still bits around the sockets which I'm struggling to get right.
so there's lath there under the plaster? that's a complex fix usually with working with the lath.
you can skim coat joint over the plaster compound. easier to finish.
