• A groove in the rim..

  • The hump is not optional 🙂

  • Friction, sealant and the bead seat. Or it doesn't.

  • Conti GP5k got a small sidewall tear that I sealed up mid ride, then glued later. After a couple of rides the glue gave up and then this last week I couldn't get it to stay up more than 5k. Got the plugs out and popped one in, got me home. Put some pressure in, couple of days later go into the shed to a jizzy puddle under the tire and the plug has come out.
I've tried popping another plug in, superglue Etc. and the Sealant keeps kind of dribbling out but not properly sealing.
    Is the tire done for?

  • My last plug only worked after it had been squished into the tyre. I believe it bonds with the rubber at that point

Although mine was in the contact patch rather than the sidewall. May make more sense to boot the tyre

  • Those rema tip top tubeless tyre repair patches are what you need.

  • then glued later

    Why would you do this?

I'm no chemist but how do you know the glue you've used doesn't interfere with the bond between sealant, tyre, and plug?

  • Cheers all. Think I'll go down the route of booting it if it doesn't hold as it is. Currently ok with 20psi or so but not going to ride on that

@Luke yeah i figured life would be easier if it wasn't the sidewall.

@pastry_bot good point that didn't occur to me. I'd read (in the first fucking post) about using a flexible rubber glue, so did that. Assumed because it was rubberised it would be fine with the tire.

  • In relation to the size of the tyre I'd say this is f***ked. Did you see what it was?

  • using a flexible rubber glue, so did that. Assumed because it was rubberised it would be fine with the tire

RT (rubber toughened) superglue is used because it is flexible, where standard will crack up as the tyre flexes. It doesn't bond any better or worse to rubber than standard.

  • fuck tubeless lads

  • just posting my usual post I do everytime I have to change a tubeless tyre

feel like I've been wrestling a gorilla

  • Nah, fairly sure it was a pothole that I unavoidably hit as I went into a corner a bit too hard in the wet and I took evasive action as a surprise car appeared.
@gbj_tester interesting, I had kind of thought it was similar to inner tube patch glue, but I guess not?

@cozey yeah I'm onboard with that. Had a good summer, oh well

  • praise god and pass the orchids

I finally found a tubeless tyre that will seat with a track pump only. I thought this was a mythical beast, on a par with baphomet

  • I'm having such luck with GP5000 and Kinlin XR26 rims

  • Until the bead stretches and it doesn't ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

  • The hump is not optional 🙂

I just got today some 3T C60 Discus rims which are supposedly tubeless compatible, Sadly no hump only the shoulder.

  • Given up on Panaracer GravelKing slicks, I tried both regular and plus versions, they cut up and puncture too easily. The ride feel was a bit shady too - cornering was wobbly and losing grip on all surfaces. After few months of struggle, plugging tyres almost every ride and the final one was where I couldn't even inflate it mid ride. However I still have GravelKing SK+ (the knobbly ones) and they've been good to me.

Switched to Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H a couple of weeks ago - managed to sit them the first time with a pump and they stay inflated for long time. No punctures yet. Fingers crossed. So far, so good.

  • I'm 8/8 so far with my pressure washer/tubeless tank. Essential gear IMO.

Hope rims seem to be good at keeping the tyre seated. H Plus Son Hydras not so much.

  • Given up on Panaracer GravelKing slicks

one of the worst tyres ive ever tried, seemingly made with tissue paper. Also look back in this thread to the photo of mine blew off the rim, sent me fly and covered everything with sealent.

  • TBF they were fragile but very fast and light for the size.

  • Fast, Light, indestructible tyre. Pick 2.

  • And available with tanwalls.

I gave up on mine once they had over 100 seeping holes between them. Cut them up afterwards and they have the thinnest tread ever, and no breaker layer (I think the Plus version does, but not available in 650b).

Have gone to G-One Speeds. No tanwall though.

  • I can’t work out why everyone isn’t using IRC tubeless tyres (I’ve only tried the road versions to be fair). They pop on really nicely, don’t cut to shreds and are nice and grippy. They really are fit and forget.

  • I guess not everyone wants to pay ÂŁ50 a tyre
