Resin fixings probably overkill then! We have a couple of TVs only up on gripit fixings, and they haven't movced in 2 years, so a combo of brick screws and those should be fine.

Mine is solely on 4 grip its. It ain't shifting.

low expansion foam
This stuff is called Insta-stick, I heard a few trade guys talking about it so I used it in one of our rooms to fix plasterboard (as opposed to traditional dot-and-dab adhesive) and I’ve got to say I was impressed. Had to buy the gun and solvent for flushing it out but worth it, less faff and time saved.

Took much of my weight so fingers crossed.

If the lower three are into plaster bird you need toggle fixings. We hang radiator with them so a TV will be more than fine

Turns out the lead pipe is borked. Leaking in a couple places but the plumbers have patched it up for now.
It'll all need completely replacing before long but hopefully that's a job I can do next year.
Owning a 150+ year old house is fun isn't it?

I'd use the design from YT nerd and general weird genius matthias wandel
it's designed for minimal tools. you don't even need the circ saw if you're careful with a hand saw
it's not the same level of insanely heavy sturdy that lots of people build, but it's the best beginner design ive come across

Are there any merits of spring toggle over hollow wall anchors?

Charlie DIYTE is a big fan of these for hollow walls and I can see why - looks very strong.
-
• #25662
@ 6.20 he says he's going to cut a dado for strength.
Am I missing something? But doesn't it cut into the wrong bit for strength? Wouldn't you want it cut into the legs so that the horizontal pieces are partially supported?
-
• #25663
I imagine for strength against racking. The two vertical sides of the dado acting against the sides of the leg stopping it from rotating.
-
• #25664
no, he's cut it in the horizontal to stop the legs flexing when you're planing (for example) which exerts horizontal forces along the top of the bench. the dado (properly called a groove in the UK) is for sturdiness, not to support the cross member. the screws are more than enough to keep it from dropping off(!)

this is cheap at the moment. track saws are great - I've had the Festool one for years and so much better/ easier to use than a table saw for sheet goods

PIR insulation on a single skin wall: terrible idea? Yeah I know, let the wall breathe, lime plaster yadda yadda. 2 exterior walls, one will be getting new silicon based render and guttering on the outside in Jan, the other has decent condition concrete render. No signs of damp other than where the gutter/render are fucked. 1st floor bedroom that's fucking arctic at the moment. Ceiling will be getting re-done. Just unsure about how far to take the walls. Tbh if it's not insulated it'll probably just end being a skim of gypsum. Will probably be in the house another 5 years so just plaster and whack the heating up?
-
• #25667
you may as well do the lot (up to the outside stop tap/meter)when you get to it - your water company should do a free lead replacement the connection but do double check

Have an original btc wall lamp and this part is broken - am I going to be able to find a spare anywhere? What’s it called (lamp holder?)?

There is an old lad just up from the copper mill that fixes lights, he's being doing it for about 50 years, I expect he will have a spare...
-
• #25670
Cheers, that makes sense.
As you said screws would be enough, so I did wonder.
-
• #25671
Have called original btc and they’re going to see if they make spares - if not I’ll give him a shot
-
• #25672
These are better and less futtery imo

I favour those in an emergency. Vitsoe supplies a version from Hilti with their rails (if you've specified plasterboard as the substrate).
Otherwise the type I linked to earlier are a good starting point.

I had a good look through the window of that shop at the weekend, it's amazing.

Anyone have anything to say about stair runner carpet?
Super-Long-Term- I'd put money on us re-instating the fireplace.
