there is certainly more to it than my statement but they gained notoriety on the houses of the cotton and sugar plantations (in the colonisation era of America) - prior to that they were just known as shutters
so to say its just name is quite disingenuous for some as I know some people renovating their house have decided against getting them due to the link/connotation the name as
