Am I missing something? But doesn't it cut into the wrong bit for strength? Wouldn't you want it cut into the legs so that the horizontal pieces are partially supported?
I imagine for strength against racking. The two vertical sides of the dado acting against the sides of the leg stopping it from rotating.
