A gravel bike needs to be just good enough at riding on the road that you don't buy a roof rack.
Basically on the one side you have "dialled road race machines" and "knife edge crit scalpels" these go on roof racks and driven to sportives or whatever to be ridden by wankers.
Then if you go too far to the other side you have "dialled downhill machines" and "knife edge trail scalpels" these go on roof racks and are driven to trail centres or whatever and to be ridden by wankers.
In the middle you have gravel bikes, they're good because they don't go on roof racks. (But they are ridden by wankers.)
