  • Sorry, your sleuthing is spot on. You definitely found the location, I just thought it looked like a different place.

    Never doubt oat44. You'll learn...

  • world championships, we'd send oat44

I assume the invite wouldn't have a location, just a picture of a church?

  • I think the invite would be designed by Ludwig--top tube against a brick wall.

  • I was able to work it out thanks to zoom/enhance but it's not straightforward. Busy day at the factory here so I can't get out.

  • I spent ages on zoom enhance and tfl. No joy.

  • Me too. It's a royal pain in the arse.

  • Same here.

  • My friend Lizzy bet me I couldn't find it.

  • There used to be a footbridge over the lines just there.

  • That vid was from 5 years ago and this was built more recently. Right lines though

  • It's a royal pain in the arse.

    Nicely done

  • Good work Ruserius. Mine was the northern portal for the Elizabeth line tunnel under the Thames on its way to Abbey Wood. I'm still going to call it Crossrail

  • I'm still going to call it Crossrail

Yep. Good tag, I went down a real Crossrail wormhole last night as I've not really been following the project. The North Woolwich Elizabeth Line Crossrail Portal sits on what used to be the North London Line to North Woolwich and was where they lowered in the boring machines to dig the tunnel under the Thames.

Between Connaught Portal and North Woolwich Portal Crossrail uses the old Connaught Tunnel which goes under the Royal Docks. It's the only existing tunnel used in the project and they had to drain 13 million litres of water from the dock above to get at it to do the work, which included removing 135 years of coal and soot that had built up.

I know it's running horrendously late but it is a pretty impressive feat of engineering nonetheless.

  • Also because I am old I remember getting the Salivalink train down to North Woolwich at the weekend.

Not only is that station now closed but a road has been built across where the tracks used to be!

  • I spent ages on zoom enhance and tfl. No joy.

    Me:-

I was able to work it out thanks to zoom/enhance but it's not straightforward. Busy day at the factory here so I can't get out.

I zoomed/enhanced to get the 473 bus number but the tfl bus link for 473 is misleading. If you switch directions Fernhill Street (which I couldn't read even with zoom/enhance) is incorrectly listed as Stop C.

In the end I just looked at the map for the 473 and looked for a section where there were two roads next to each other (hence my vague reference to "factory" but it would have been too obvious to have put that in italics). Also easy to look for the two tower blocks in the pic once you know the route.

Streetview has it all under construction but the building is easy to make out.

5:24 in Ludwig's youtube vid gives roughly the right place: https://youtu.be/e0W7Dw_5ho0?t=324

  • looked at the map for the 473 and looked for a section where there were two roads next to each other

That was how I thought people would find it

  • I was convinced it was 673 for ages.

Then looked at 473, but didn't get past the stop being letter S.

  • If I've got the new one right then that was quite a ride between the two last night.

  • Indeed.
Enough to put your knee out, should you choose to ride that far.

  • running horrendously late

Diamondgeezer did a piece about it today, the two year anniversary of when it was due to open. He fully expects to do another similar piece this time next year. It is an impressive feat of engineering though, I agree.

  • On the subject of impressive feats... Serious milage from Ruserius

  • Should have grabbed this but it was too far East! ;)
