  • Love that you’re getting genuine 1-bike-for-everything use out of it.

If you’re upgrading you probably won’t want lower than 105 level so that gives you the cables hidden under the bar tape for a more modern look. IME 10 and 11 speed 105 shifts perfectly, it’s remarkable how good it is. It all depends on good maintenance of course. I think 34x32 is probably low enough even for touring in mountains given that you’re a regular rider but if not then you might need to use a mtb cassette and mech which will be fine compatability-wise as long as you stick with the same number of speeds from the same manufacturer.

Brake compatibility shouldn’t be an issue either.

  • Hey Bobble, nice bike! I’ve just looked into the same thing, so:

if you’re happy to stay with 10 speed then I’d consider going smaller at the chainring end. FSA make a subcompact 10 speed crankset (Omega I think) that gives a 30 tooth at the front. Possible new BB needed though.

Otherwise, a Tiagra 4700 GS derailleur allows for a 34 tooth cassette (possibly even a 36 tooth MTB cassette) without any modification. I’ve just bought a 36 tooth cassette, if you’re interested I’ll let you know how it works!
If you go Tiagra at the back you’ll need Tiagra 4700 shifters though, as I understand the pull ratio is different to other 10 speed shifters. Shop on gumtree/eBay/Facebook marketplace for bargain Tiagra 4700 parts, people often pull them off to upgrade to 11 speed.

  • Accurate, 11-36t works friend has been using it for about a year.

GRX 10 speed chainset would work well, GRX10 should work with 4700 too.

  • Sticking with 105 10-speed will give you more choice over your rear mech. You could grab some 5700 shifters (10spd, cables under the tape) which will play nicely with either a 10speed GS mech (but not Tiagra) or you could use a 9spd mtb mech. I had this set up on my CDF, with an XT mech and it worked well with a 11-36t cassette.

  • Cheers for the suggestions all :) Tempted to start a CP for my bikes and riding.

Front mech doesn't shift well but think it is going from a 34-50 if that has anything to do with it? Don't know if it is 105 or tiagra. Also think my mech is a 105 RD5701, short/medium cage so don't confidently know how big I could go.

Where can I find out what shifters will work with what mech? Think these suggestions cover me though. The chainset is an eyesore so may upgrade that, possibly something sugino and maybe a new front mech.

@StevePeel cheers :) If I get space for a road bike may do that, do for some relaxed gearing here and front rack/basket. My rear mech shifts amazingly so shame to ditch it but hills loaded.

@AlexD just enjoyed your thread! I moved to Bristol start of September, let me know if you want to do any riding!

@cnnchi Tiagra 4700 (done some googling now) seems to be a solid/economical option

  • 5701 rear mech (not sure which version) and then dunno about the front

  • Hey, welcome to Brizzle! I ride with a local gravel group - I’ll pm you with details of that sounds appealing.

There’s info regarding mech/shifter compatibility out there across many squillions of articles and forum posts.

If you’re sticking to shimano, basically 9 speed road/mtb and also 10spd road is all the same cable pull ratio, (apart from 4700 which is different!) so is compatible (so, you can use a 9speed mtb mech with 10 speed road shifters).

Then after that it all goes nuts and everything is speed and discipline specific.

I know zilch about front mechs and only have one across 5 bikes so can’t help you with that :-)

Edit: that looks like a GS (medium cage) mech to me - you can use that with a 32t cassette, possibly a 36t.

  • Just buy a full GRX groupset

  • I have 10 speed tiagra 4700 on my Equilibrium and it’s been faultless for three years or so. Great value and looks decent with the hidden cabling.

  • @TM would love to but £££

  • @AlexD cheers! yes please do that would be ace. Could it do 34 or are mtb and road cassettes different? Just started a CP thread as to not ruin the genesis thread!

  • Here's my cdf a while back about to head out for dome camping.

  • do you want me to teach you how to focus?

  • They're low res scans, I promise

  • I sold my CdF a while back but built something similar, photos to follow! ;)

  • Just spotted the 2021 Flyer...

Disks. Knobbly tyres. Is nothing sacred, does everything have to be a gravel bike to sell these days?

  • And you have to be blind to overlook those dropouts

  • This is very strange considering the Day One is still in the range

  • I thought that too - the old one with the steel frame / carbon fork is a great bike, pretty versatile too - I can't decide if I want to try and make mine a kilo lighter for longer road rides or stick a rack & 32c hipstergrav tyres on it...

  • That's lovely - I really like the paint on this year's models

  • I’ve not been able to get out to some nice woods like @acinq, but fitted some Terravail Sparwood. Need to set up for tubeless and sort out reach and cockpit which is a bit funky atm.
