Maybe it’s me...
It's an incomplete change in the cycling market. When all wheels were built in the shop selling them, every bike shop had at least a half decent wheel builder on staff. Bike shops now continue to believe that they should offer that service, and try to do so without the volume of basic wheels passing through the shop which were the training ground for shop staff in the olden days. The smart thing to do would be to admit that they can't do it.

Smart thing: not divs
Bit like politicians in general, but definitely this lot of tories: unable to just admit you don’t know/can’t achieve something.

like politicians
Nobody with a realistic understanding of his own ability or the proper bounds of its imposition on others would ever enter politics. At least untrained bike shop "mechanics" can only fuck the world up one bike at a time 🙂

Really, makes no financial sense to get wheels built. Most times I recommend customers just to get a new one. Labour + spokes doesn't get too far from a basic Shimano pre built wheel
-
• #10157
Exactly - the market has changed to the point where it's all but impossible to shop build a wheel at a price lower than a basic factory wheel. Shops no longer build frames, as so many did even when I was a boy. They need to acknowledge that hand-built wheels are also a high-cost, high-skill niche business best left to a few expert specialists.

Don’t forget the niche low skill home builders. Pre-built Eingang hubs on 622 rims aren’t available at my LBS...

yeah, I'm slightly annoyed in myself at half knowing this was the case that they probably couldn't do the work but went with it anyway.
A mate who is a very good mechanic declined the opportunity to build wheels for me because he said he just doesn't do it often enough get as good as he would want to be at it and said it wouldn't be cost effective for him to try... I'll get one of you lot to build my next set! lockdown and locality is what got me this time...

said they were expert mud guard fitters and that this made up the majority of their workshop time

Does anyone have a reliable erd that they can share for the Kinlin XR-270 symmetric rim?

Anyone know where I might be able to get a 24h Dura Ace HB-9000 front hub?
-
• #10163
as Hope don't seem to do one, who makes a 20h disc thru axle (12mm) front hub? it's for cross, so would need to be fairly robust and / or serviceable
-
• #10164
Not seen such a thing. Wheelsmith had some 20H QR, but they would be hard work to convert to 12mm, see the chat at https://www.lfgss.com/comments/15302349/incontext/ et seq
Since they a. think 20H is a good idea and b. were flogging off their stock, it's possible that they might source a 20H hub for modern forks, it appears to be a pretty generic Taiwanese hub with custom drilling.

Novatec d711sb apparently have a 20h version, can only find Ali express links to buy with a quick look, looks to be easy enough to convert. Otherwise I might be able to get one from a distributor, need to order some spokes and stuff off them Monday so let me know if you want to check, would probs mean buying the QR version and conversion stuff if they have stock, their parts list only says 15mm endcaps but they may have 12mm, would be about ÂŁ45 if you want to roll into town and pick up from Harry Hall's.

i'd be up for that, yeah. thanks a lot. happy to pay up front. 20h disc on a very old carbon rim might not be a great idea, but if it fails i'll only fall on mud.
-
• #10167
I'll speak to them Monday, pay if/when you pick up, it'll be through the shop anyway.

Spot on.
There are very good wheelset to be had at a reasonable price straight out if the factory. I think it is fair to say that the majority of new wave cyclists are mainly looking for "lighter" or "aero" or perhaps just a label. The market is saturated with this stuff. I firmly believe you could write Zipp on a turd and sell it in a bike shop.
Having got into wheelbuilding a couple of years ago for me it is about the almost limitless combinations you can put together. There are so many quality components to choose from. I also find it extremely satisfying and rewarding (i am old) and the only inherent skill you need is patience.
I wouldn't buy another wheelset off the shelf. -

Thanks a lot.

powerway also has a 20h front disc hub (with pretty small flanges for straight pull spokes):
Powerway CX32
and novatec d041sb should be available in 20h (but needs to be converted)

A source for a silver, non-polished, 40 hole, 700c Sputnik rim?
-
• #10174
hey saxmm, I did not find a response to your question, so I did some calculations:
with ERD 610mm, 36 spokes, and DA7600 I used 70mm flange diameter for the maths and came to following lenghts:3x crossed: 289,3mm , 290 or 288mm should do the trick
4x crossed: 301mm, 300mm should be fine too.when calculating with diameter of 67mm, the spokes are nearly the same:
3x : 290mm
4x: 301,2mm -

This is your daily reminder that ERD is not a good measurement for calculating spoke length. Use internal diameter + rim wall depth.
Yeah, they are, which is a shame... they seem to be doing very well selling electric bikes to the masses and their google reviews are full of gold stars... 🤷‍♂️ Maybe it’s me...
